Crisp copper coloured body with a light tan head about a centimetre tall and a few bubbles floating around. Aroma of piney and resiney hops with some malt coming through and a touch of caramel. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty flavour at first with some caramel, a bit of the hops and a grassy note. Aftertaste shows mostly caramel and malt with a little earth flavour, some light grassy and herbal hops with a floral finish. Overall, a decent APA showing some okay qualities, but nothing great nor to be scouted for. A decent tasting beer that shows well. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 16-February-2012 for US$2.49 sampled at home in Washington on 23-February-2012.

Side by side by side comparison. All 22 oz. bottles Vermont has the color, head and carbonation levels as the previous other two state varieties I sampled. The nose and flavor of this brew is much more geared toward a malty APA and the hops play a second fiddle. In fact I could really get much hop character at all from the brew. I really enjoyed comparing theses beers and the concept and marketing was brilliant. After all I tracked down 3 of the 4 bottles to compare them! It was a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Personally I feel the Maine was most pleasing to my palate.

Side by side by side comparison. All 22 oz. bottles. Maine has an identical appearance as the Massachusetts, color and carbonation levels with retention being much better than the other two. The nose has a much higher level of caramel malt. The malt is balanced with a much more Earthy hop. More wood Earthy rather than pine. Mildly bitter in the finish. Mouthfeel is also on the dry side. I prefer this over the MA and VT versions.

Side by side by side comparison. All 22 oz. bottles. Massachusetts shows transparent amber with ample carbonation in a lager glass. ½ white head with lace. Sweet malt and honey nose. Flavor is mostly bread malt, touch of honey with a spicy, citrus hop showing up in the finish. Dry cotton-like mouthfeel. Straight forward and standard APA, yet still nicely done.

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with little retention recedes to slick surface and bug rim. Chocolate, espresso, citrus and mild oak aromas. Thin with a tangy, sour chocolate-covered citrus and lasting espresso front to back. Hot oak finish.

A twist off bomber? That’s a new one. Anyway, this is from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville, VA. Looking forward to this as I’ve grown to love coffee stouts. Pours dark brown with a medium sized frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, wood and a bit of roast. All the components are definitely there. The taste is spicy wood, vanilla, coffee, roasted malts and tart notes. A bit more wood and chocolate in the finish. Medium bodied. The flavors could come together better. Medium bodied with smooth carbonation. Smells nice, otherwise just OK.

Slightly hazy amber coloured body with a thick, dense off-white head. Aroma of malt, vinegar, cardboard and very little else. Light-bodied; Assertive effervescence; Strong hops up front that fade almost immediately to a cardboardie and almost soapy flavour with some malt following behind and a dash of earth. Aftertaste all of a sudden reasserts the hops which are actually pretty strong and almost metallic. Overall, an interesting beer - not necessarily a fall beer in my opinion, but shows some good hops and deep flavours for the season, which isn’t bad. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 18-November-2011 for US$2.55 sampled at home in Washington on 07-February-2012.
