HUGE thanks to SinH4. Bottle sampled on train pre-ZBF 2018. Pale golden. Nose is very basic sugar, candy, almost funk. Lacks bit body here, very basic sugar, iron almost, harsh plastic finish, stale apple, sugar, candy, finish is not the best with the harsh plastic, no complexity. Very weak for the style.

Back in my early days of rating, early 2000s - this brewery I quite liked. Now, just after having their Double Drooling Dog IPA, I am not sure where they are going. Hazy light-golden, fizzy white cap, not much stay and lacing. Mild hops over pear notes and burnt grains. The taste has some fruitiness, but way too sweet again in the mouth. Again, unbalanced and not sure where this is going. I think Magnotta was the first real IPA I had back in the day (as in not Keith's). Not going in the right direction.

Pours a copper colour with an amber highlight. The head is frothy, light beige, with average retention and some good foamy lacing. The aromas are quite unexpected at first with some sweaty sock sourness and some crazy sweetness with hints of nuts. Eventually, this calms down to show roasted malts and coffee notes. The taste is a little too sweet for a black IPA. Not much sign of hops in here ?? Chocolate malts. Ok, some light hoppiness does start showing up, but nothing for this style. Way too sweet, like coffee with way too much sugar. Like, when we were young and starting to drink coffee. Not cool anymore.

Apple shaped bottle, many thanks Ramón! My 20th Ice Cider. Golden color with no head. Aroma is bratapfel, cellar, smooth must. Taste is sweet natural apples, slightly sirupy, gummibears, vanilla, a touch nutty, a touch tannins, no real acidity there, but it doesn't feel too sweet. Oily mouthfeel, flat. Tasty and very balanced, though not too deep nor complex. A simple delight.

6-pack from the LCBO. Have not bought Magnotta in a while, but their IPA was my first look at the real style and quite liked it over 15 years ago when I started rating beers. Pours a hazy golden-orange colour with a white cap, decent stay and nice lace. Aromas of grassy hops, floral with some light caramel malts. The taste is grassy bitter with a little dryness. Fruity hints in the background. Another good product, but preferred from the bottle.
Earlier Rating: 4/15/2012 Total Score: 3.2
Originally rated May 2004. Golden orange in colour, this IPA with a medium head leaves a foamy lacing. Lightly carbonated, I can smell hints of citrus (specially oranges). It has a medium bitter taste to it but with a smooth finish. The strong alcohol content is not unpleasant, but hits the right spot in your head. Better then Keith’s for a Canadian IPA.
