LCRBM2. Hazy chestnut colour with no head. Subtle sour aroma. Good toffee and good hops. Good raisin fruit. Citrus stops it being flabby. Hops are excellent. This took me a bit by surprise and I very much liked it. Went back for more.

Bottle from Bevmo, Valencia; Nose of a little hops and some caramel malts; copper color with a small beige head; flavor with some spice, caramel, a little citrus, and hoppy bitterness for the finish.

2004 bottle 66/227 - Here’s a special beer for rating #400. I was traveling and couldn’t save this bottle as it was likely to be overheated in the car sometime. So what else could I do? I downed it myself the night after the release party. Barrel Aged Numbskull pours murky brown with no head. It has a strong malt aroma with a hint of bourbon. The flavor is sweet and intense. It’s mellowed nicely in the barrel and is smooth instead of overly hot as many barley wines can be. There’s very little carbonation on the palate and not much hops coming through. The sweetness masks the 10% ABV and the warmth in the throat at the end is the only cue to its strength. This is really good, if perhaps a little TOO sweet.

on tap at the brewery - This ale has a light aroma of yeast and malt with a hint of spice. The flavor is fairly sweet with a mildly hoppy finish. It’s smooth going down and thus an easy to drink beer that could easily be a session brew. It’s rather refreshing. I don’t like it as much as Horny Devil, but then I’m often partial to big beers.

draft at the brewery - Pours orangish and has a very pleasant citrus hops aroma. Well intensely hoppy in flavor as expected, there’s a strong malt balance and a good mouthfeel thanks to a good medium-full body and light carbonation that make this big beer go down surprisingly easily. Very nice.

Cask at brewery - Pours clear amber with a big, billowy head that leaves good lacing. It has a nice hoppy aroma with some slight spice undertones. The flavor has some caramel malts and a fine quality hops kick. Cask carbonation is light and smooth. There’s a nice balance to this ESB. It didn’t blow me away, but it’s quite good.

Well, the pour was a nice clear strawberry color until I got some sediment in there; now it’s a bit cloudy, but the head is massive and well-retained - very bright, crisp hop aroma, with a lot of american barleywine-like smells (lots of caramel malt, light and dark fruit, background alcohol) - very smooth mouthfeel, even though the carbonation is fairly high - bracing hops up front, followed by an almost sticky malt sweetness - caramel, strawberry, cherry, a hint of sweetened grapefruit - almost everything about this beer says barleywine to me - very tasty stuff - many thanks to herbjones for hooking me up.

Bottle. Complex nose - coffee throughout - initially raisin, mace and astringent alcohol aroma with more of a burnt aroma coming out as it warms. Midnight black with large tan head. Initially has a creamy, very smooth espresso and dark chocolate flavor - with more warming the alcohol and astringency comes out more but fades again as it approaches room temperature. A constantly changing flavor as you drink. A true work of art.

Bottle of Odeeds at beer tasting 8/27/06; tasted alongside BA Speedway; Nose of bittersweet chocolate with coffee; different than the BA; opaque brown with a small tan head; flavor had a tingly initail bite then the coffee and chocolate set in; thicker palate than the BA Speedway.
