Very much like Three Floyds Dreadnaught IPA without the thick malt. Classic pine/grapefruit hops aroma leads to similar citrusy, tart grapefruit flavors with pine and even floral, perfumey hops mingling with sweet caramely malt. Very chewy and somewhat toasty. The body itself is clear amber/copper with a medium light tan head. Recommended for hopheads and fans of 3Fs Dreadnaught or Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.

Bottled. Clear amber with brief creamy head. Intense grapefruity hop aroma. Dry with clean, hard mouthfeel. Very hoppy and aromatic wityh lingering bitter finish. Nice aroma, but all about the hops. Too simple malt profile.

2004 bottle. Pours a medium light shade of orange, with some bright gold-yellows. Very clear. Moderate foamy white head. Smells straightforward. Lots of high alpha hops aroma, citrusy but also a lot of dryness. Flavor begins with a large dose of bittersweet hops, like a ripe naval orange, moving in to some dry malting, with more floral hops notes towards the finish. Body is medium to medium-light. No trace of alcohol. Complexity is lacking. Having had 4 or 5 Arcadia IPAs the night before, I can definitely detect the lesser quality in Avery’s IPA. No interplay of malt and hops, and the hops flavor sings a single note for most of the beer.

Rerate Bottle purchased at Hop and Leaf Feb 2005. Much better than I remember or just good relative to all the crap I drank in TN?? I’d like to think that this one is a bit better, with more complexity of hops and a good, if somewhat light malt base.

This was a delicious porter. Poured deep red-brown with a medium, persistent light tan head. Caramely, somewhat nutty aroma. Very rich flavor with roasted malts leading to very strong layered chocolate and caramel, finishing with earthy, spicy hops that create a piney, slightly bitter aftertaste. This does indeed "expand" the porter category and works very well. Superior to the Out of Bounds Stout.

Poured chestnut brown with a medium light tan head. Toasty, cheerio aroma with a touch of caramel. Bitter roasted malt flavor leading to dry chocolate, finishing with bitter hops. A touch of sweetness developed as the beer warmed. Rather thin-bodied. Not as good as their porter.

2003 bottle. Pours a deep orange-red, with some fiery golden hues. Much brighter and more colorful than its many belgian counterparts. Also much more clear, unfortunately. Good off-white head and a big aroma of crisp hops, lots of sweet candied sugar and a spicy yeast. Begins with so sweet a flavor it burns going down and I can only sip a bit at a time. Once I get past the initial shot of candi, there is some unusually bitter hops for the style, not citric or anything, but quite floral and more apparent than any other quad. Still, tastes quite clean and has an elegant yeast finish with chewy caramels, molasses, salty raisins and even some riper red fruits. Mouthfeel is peppery at first but has a buttery/creamy finish this is quite nice. I let this bottle sit out for 2 hours, and after returning to it, it was still highly carbonated. Good stuff, I just wish they wouldnt filter their beers so much. The huge sweetness is the biggest problem, but maybe this would even out better in a few years.7/4/7/3/12

2000 bottle, waxed top at XBF05 Very solid and drinkable it remains, with that big fiery fruit and alcohol burn, some acidity and plenty of candi sugar. The aging has added a nice note of oxidation and seems to have toned down some of the syrupiness and hops. I enjoyed it. 7/4/7/4/15

Pale yellow/golden colour with a medium-large bubbled head. Aroma of coriander seed, curacao and some fresh wheat. Medium-bodied; Spicey initial flavour of coriander seed, corn, wheat, curacao and lemon. Aftertaste shows bubble gum and cloves as well as a slight drying feeling. Overall, a very impressive witbier from a great brewery! I got this twelve ounce bottle from Phil (haddon90) in Knoxville, Tennessee...thanks again Phil!
