bottle - Pours murker amber-brown and smells of hops, pine, booze, and fruit in a rather odd mix. The flavor has heavy hops with a little pine and a lot of malt sweetness. The malt profile is particularly odd. I’m not sure what’s going on with it, but it’s off and there’s something stale about the whole thing (it’s a new bottle). The body is thin for the style and the lingering bitterness isn’t particularly pleasant. The side of the bottle says that "the brew staff pooled opinions and ideas. When a consensus could not be made, they decided to throw it all in the pot". I assumed that they were kidding, but this beer is such a mess I’m not so sure now. At least it’s hoppy. I can appreciate that.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours with a small white head and a hazy golden body. Aroma of honey and light hops. Taste is bitter, malty and faded. Light bubbles and dry.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours with a large tan head over a deep brown body. Aroma of coffee, caramel, toffee, and leather. Taste is coffee, chocolate, spice, nutshells and a touch sour (maybe?). Creamy bubbles, and a dry finish.

Bottle. Pours a dark tarnished penny color with a dense head and lots of junk swimming around on the carbonation. Flavor is very weak for an IIPA... a bit of caramel and apple, wine or wine grapes and a little brandy. Flavor has much of the same stuff going on... lots of booze (almost like rubbing alcohol at times), odd fruits and very little hops presence. Hmm...

Bottle with thanks to coyotehunter. So this has to be the darkest oktoberfest that I’ve ever seen... it is a leathery dark brown with a very minimal head. Aromas of dusty malt, roasted nuts, a bit of leather, some tartness (cherries?) and earth. Flavor is similar, kind of watery and with a bit of a sourness that pokes its head out from time to time. It’s not enough to assert itself strongly, but when you forget about it, there it is... Not bad, fairly unique...

Bottle generously provided by coyotehunter. Pours a dingy brown with little head and pitiable aromas. A bit of bitter hops and light malt is about it. Flavor is also a swirl of weak flavors might qualify as an English IPA, but not a great one. There’s some toffee and a bit of bitterness, but this is just not that great.

Sample at the Sam Adams beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 07/30/09. The beer is a mostly clear light orange color with a medium off-white head that recedes quickly. Spotty lacing on the cup. Mild hops aroma with touches of malt and citrus. Medium, clean body with hops and bready malt flavors. The finish is moderately hoppy and short. Overall an okay IPA, and a below average IIPA.

Sample from a growler at the Super Terrific Stout Tasting on Feb 16th. Two Stouts whose labels feature an axe being wielded. Cool. This beer is blackish-brown with a medium and foamy light brown head that diminishes slowly. Rings of lacing on the glass. The aroma consists mainly of coffee along with hints of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Medium, smooth body with a tasty chocolate and coffee character, along with light hops and malt. The finish is mild and roasty with a mocha aftertaste. Better than expected, I would try this again.

On tap at Schmohz. Light hazy yellow body, thin off-white head. Light grassy aroma with bready malts, light sweetness. Refreshing body, crisp and light, with hints of lemon. Crisp but quick grassy hops finish. Smooth, easy-drinking fare for a hot summer afternoon.

On tap at Schmohz. Hazy orange body, thin to medium off-white head. Piney, citrusy hops aroma backed by bready malt. Body as expected, hop-dominated but backed by sufficient malt depth to carry the citrus and pine. Bitter finish. Quaffable.
