Description

This Belgian Strong reminded me of an English Old Ale. Poured a dirty copper-brown, with abundant yeast sediment. No head. Bourbon, a touch of apple peel, and vinous notes characterize the aroma. Flavor of bourbon and wood, muting the vinous, slightly fruity character of the underlying malts. Alcohol is strong and warming. This beer was also flat. Interesting and tasty despite its flaws.

Muddy dull brown - looks dreadful in the glass. No hiss upon opening and no carbo visible. Aroma has apple, alcohol and rich malts - caramel and concentrated amounts of pale malt. Flat body, but alcohol arrives quickly and forcefully to minimize oiliness. Of course, this is merely replaced by heat. It carries alongside it an apple accent as well as slightly caramelized pears and peaches. Strongly alcoholic finish. I find the overall product too hot and the beer component too one-dimensional (read: dominated by the calvados). Decent at best.

Cloudy colored but in the good way, not cloudy like a Bud. This is probably the most distinct belgian white I have ever tried, definitly worth a try by any beer lover. It has a strong citric kick. I wouldn’t drink this on a regular basis but I do recommend everyone to try it. Rerate 5/5/06 - oh boy, I compared this to a bud. Well this is definitly more sour than I mentioned. Liek citrus mixed with sourness. Medium nobody, feel that sourness for a while. I am lowering my rating just a bit.

Hazy brown coloured with ugly red highlights. No head at all, even with a quite vigourous pour! Aroma of plums, raisins, cranberries, malt, earth and alcohol. Medium-bodied; Still; Sweet, musty, mushroomy maltiness, mixed with some oak tannins and the ever present alcoholic burn. Aftertaste was fairly lacking, only a bit of the caster sugar sweetness comes out, and the malt bitterness lasts for an unpleasurable amount of time. Overall, this one needs some time, I guess? Perhaps it will get some carbonation, but the pour doesn't show too much sediment, so all with this batch might be screwed? I bought this 33 cL bottle at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York and sampled it on 08.December.2003.

Cloudy amber color. Strong malt aroma, Barley Wine style. Strong mouthfeel, sweet in the front, strong character: a lot of malt, caramel, light liquorice, hop, some spices. Ends very bitter and quite long. Very well brewed, quite hiding the alcohol, incredible strong flavor.

I like this beer it is distinct yet not disgusting like fisher for example. One does taste a hint of mustard seed at the end and i liked it.

Vibrant but hazy brick colour. Good head retention for such strength. Aroma of plum, tomato. It has a warm that is almost physical, like a wood oven. Alcohol, yeast notes come on strong on the palate. Warm malts - bread crust, date - fit into the mix. Light for its size.

Dark tan colour. Peppery, light caramel aroma. Good dose of yeastiness. Sourish finish. Not very interesting, but at least I didn't taste any mustard.

Dark orange. Slight white head. Vinegary nose, spicey, malts & honey-like (strange, no honey added on this). Sweet taste. With a punch - a good one. The aftertaste is peppery-spicey - but whether this IS valerian and lemon balm, I don't drink enough pharmaceutical concoctions to decide that. This is nice, anyway. Very rich mouthfeel. Spicyness keeps going on. Amazing, interesting, but the bed has to be near.

(Specimen 1 yr. old) Very little head, medium-thick bubbles. Straw coloured, very clear. Nose containing glue, organic solvent, yeast, banana, madeira. Some oxidation, sweetness is main taste, not cloying. there is a spiceyness, not reminiscent of mustard however. Aftertaste as of dessertwine, with spiceyness still present: a bit like a deliberately spiced liqueur wine, with honey. Rather good body, oxidation nothwithstanding.
