Bottle. All black pour, with a swirling tan head that disappeared at normal pace. Aroma is roasted malt and dark chocolate. Roasted malt and coffee taste. Not a huge body like many imperial stouts, balance was OK on this one, nothing out of the park. Alcohol aroma and taste became present as it warmed.

A good but very simple porter. Thick body and good palate. Coffee aroma and coffee flavor, light malt.

Thanks again to Brewfiend. I got a lot of coffee from this beer in the nose and the flavor. Thick and black but lightly carbonated. Bitter coffee and chocolate in the flavor as well as malt, but this is not there in any quantity and is very light.

Pleasing orange color, with a small but creamy foamed head. Typical amber ale aroma: a touch of herbal and grassy hop, maybe a touch of citrus, then some caramelized doughy malts. Flavor starts balanced, with a bready malt and a spicy hop. Finishes empty, with a light hopping but almost feeling watery. Nevertheless there’s a pepper in the aftertaste, and an overall clean drinkability to this that saves it from just another boring amber.

Nicely hopped aroma, lots of pine and grapefruit, a touch of sweat (amarillo?). Lean caramelized bready malts with a lighter than expected hop flavoring. Tingly and slightly citric. Finish is medium bitter and moving toward thin, off-dry. Copperish color, appealing dense head and dense if sparse lacing. Hmm, yes it does seem to feel thin the further in I go. I could drink alot of this and enjoy it, but it does feel somewhat flawed.

Bottle courtesy of Beerandblues2: Poured a pitch-black color porter with a nice medium foamy head with great retention. Aroma of chocolate malt with some nice roasted notes is really enjoyable. Taste is dominated by the chocolate malt with again some nice roasted malt to balance and light hops at the end. Body is quite full but could have been creamier IMO. I have to admit that this is very well done and would be nice as a session porter considering the low alcohol %.

Pretty nice on the whole, very characterful, although I’m not blown away by it. Starts with a deep garnet-black color and a nice full creamy beige head and soft lacing. Aroma mildly acrid with soured chocolate milk and light roast malt. There is perhaps an element of light citric or grassy hop in there. Nice medium-full mouthfeel, with a good chocolate, coffee and roast beginning. Not in the least overtly sweet, although a tinge of caramel and acidity rise through the middle, leaving a slightly acidic and dry finish. Very well built, modest strength and robustness, but thats very OK by me. I just feel there could be a little more depth, and I think the acidity might detract somewhat.

Bottle courtesy of Beernadblues2: Poured a deep red/brown color ale with a quite large foamy head with adequate retention. Aroma of medium citrus hops with some weak caramel malt. Taste consists of semi-sweet caramel malt with some medium citrus and bitter hops. Body is about average with some medium carbonation and no sign of alcohol. Overall, I thought this was a light version of an American strong ale and definitely lacking on character to make it truly worthwhile.

Bottle (trade with ford9719). Very different aroma - lemon, green pepper or light jalapeno and leather. Hazy dark amber color with moderate head. Lightly sweet fruity flavor initial followed by a moderate malty flavor and ending with a hops and ash flavor. Different and really hard to compare to anything else I’ve drunk.

12oz bottle from Crosling, drunk on 1/25/07, thanks Nick!
Hell of an appearance on this one! A huge, fairly dense cream-colored head rises up quickly atop a mostly clear (beer is bottle conditioned) maize-golden body with ample, tiny-bubbled carbonation. Head recedes slowly, never falling below cover, though, and leaving profuse amounts of webby lacing.
Wow, a lot going on in the nose. All at once, you’re hit with distinctly authentic European lager yeast (czech pils at least if not another) which produces crisp apples and other minerals. True-to-style European hops are well-integrated, adding bright acidity and plenty of raw, aromatic, wet, green grass. Strong herbal notes arise as well and sink slowly and evenly in to an assertive, but not dominant or brash maltiness that is full of honey, warm sourdough baguette and a touch of dry biscuits. Smells absolutely delicious, but rather strong as well (not surprisingly). Warming releases more and more yeast notes, light apple and mineral notes are omnipresent but the dry, herbal hops remain somewhat stronger than the yeast. A fair amount of acidity seems to perk up on the finish, as well. No alcohol vapors, very clean, which is a great thing about strong lagers vs. strong ales (when they’re done correctly). Medium-high to high aroma strength and very sniffable.
Sumptuous pils malt mixes with crisp, grassy and surprisingly quite bitter hoppiness to provide stunning balance. Yeast is very crisp on the end, biting even, as it should be, with sourish grains and moderate doughiness setting in on to the palate as it progresses. Maybe a bit too much sourness/acidity builds up and there are some rough, biscuity/grainy edges, but for a lager of this strength, I’ve shocked by its drinkability. Contributing to this most primarily are its wonderful attenuation and natural carbonation which is highly tolerable and engaging. Knock out some of the excessive sourdough notes and maybe even take it a little more dry (it can never be too dry!). Substantial texture, but light enough to keep with a drinkable nature. Alcohol very well masked. Great intro to this brewery!
