@ Leuven Innovation 2016. Dark brown/black colour, brown foam. Roasty, coffee, smoke, whisky. Earthy whith notes of ashes. Very well balanced. Very nice imperial stout. Big surprise!

Hazy blond with no head. Aroma has hints of adhesive and sour fruit. Quite thin. Flavour really has lots of sweet and sour blackcurrants.

At LIBF. Now here is an interesting idea: the English city of Burton became famous for its brewing water which was deemed ideal for 19th-century India pale ale, but it already had this tradition of malty Burton ales long before that, and this style too, basically a local variant of English strong ale, was very popular in England for a long time - until it became all but extinct. Victory Art now has this resurrection of the style - Russia probably being the last country I’d associate with a historical style this traditionally British. Anyway: medium sized, pale greyish beige head, clear and beautiful coppery bronze robe. Aroma of toffee, honey, fig, caramel candy, gingerbread, rusty iron, apple peel. Sweet and fairly clean ’dried’ fruit sweetness, very caramelly and smooth malt body, bit resinous even, gaining a very softly bittering toasted edge in the end as well as a dash of soft herbal and vaguely floral hops and warming, brandy-like alcohol; caramelly and even somewhat brown sugar-like sweetness gets the last word. Rremarkable how these guys have produced an old fashioned, thoroughly malty English style strong ale without any ’authentic’ examples to refer to. Nice!

F: big, brown, very long lasting. C: dark, opaque. A: dark chocolate, leather, nutty, cocoa, smoky, coffee, peppery, figs, raisin, light alcohol. T: chocolate malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, expresso, light molasses, fruity, dark plums, cherries, smoked meat, leather, burn sugar, hint of vanilla, wau perfect beer for this style, worth to try, 0,5l bottle from Leuven Innovation Beer Festival May 2016.

At LIBF. Sour ale with blackcurrant (cassis) and entirely Russian label. Thick, lacing, off-white head, hazy ochre blonde robe. Aroma carries a lot of cassis indeed (blackcurrant juice), yoghurt, stale sweat, pineapple, lemon zest; vivid estery and ’genuine’ fruitiness, gooseberry and obviously blackcurrant, crisp acidity, bit lemony, evolving into a more restrained lactic tartness, very drying while the fruit acidity and esteriness continue, still retaining bready and juicy maltiness. Lovely sour and the first one I have which was made in Russia, very interesting.

Bottle @ LIBF’16. Shared with the RB Belgian team. Ahhh teh taste of Russian WW2 ace pilots in a glass, wonder what Zuhkov would say about that one. Brune foncée, col fin beige, doré au verre. Arôme offre un nez malté grillé, caramel où je note une pointe de fumé penchant vers le tourbé et qcq résidus de boisé. Je note aussi un léger rétro-nasal de fruits secs voir léger noir. Palais est malté, grillé, caramel choco léger avec un alcool ressortant bien et une touche de booze whisky d’où émane des notes fines de tourbe et fumé avec une note fruitée sec en accompagnement de la base maltée foncée. Ne laisse pas vraiment passer ses 13%.
