Description

24 June 2018. At Tilburgs Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke.
Hazy brown with a lasting, small, foamy, tan head; lots of lacing. Aroma of caramel, baked banana, dough, cold tea, earth, herbs, orange liqueur, hint of sherry. It tastes medium malty sweet, hints of plum & orange, some dough, and light to medium herbal bitter, tea-like, some spicy hops. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering bready malt & dough, woody accents, warming sherry or cognac alcohol. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft to flat carbonation. A very decent Barley Wine, even though I like it sweeter.

Sampled @ Tilburg Bierfestival 2018. Clear orange color, average sized white head. Aroma is mainly lime. Also in the flavor the lime is dominant with the other flavors supporting in the background. Quite interesting this brew. Refreshing once you get used to the dominant lime flavor. Nice.

Draught @ Oirschots Bierfestival 2018. Hazy yellow color, medium sized white head. Smells and tastes exactly like I expected: blond beer with tea and herbs. Not my kind of beer at all.

Sampled from bottle @ Oirschots Bierfestival 2018. Nearly opaque very dark brown to black color, medium sized light brown colored head. Aroma has huge coffee and chocolate notes. Wow, very nice start! Flavor is malts, chocolate, cocoa and coffee big time. Delicious! Oily texture, medium body and soft carbonation. Lovely!

Barley wine with rye and honey, first presented at a winter beer festival in January 2017 apparently, but this bottle comes from the Bierproeverij Nieuw-Namen some six weeks ago, where I bought it straight from the brewer. Moussy, medium thick, irregularly lacing, pale greyish beige-white head, quickly thinning and partially opening in the middle; initially near-clear, later hazy warm copper-hued burgundy bronze robe with minute yeast particles divided throughout. Aroma of pear syrup, toffee, thick brown honey indeed, stewed plums, candied figs, raisin bread, chestnuts, hints of soggy rye bread (sourish) or rye bread dough, turnip juice, melting caramel candy, ruby port, some wet dog. Sweet onset, brown sugariness, plum compote, candied fig, raisin, outspoken pear syrup flavour - the honey blending with the esters I suppose, with a light sourish undertone providing some balance against the sweetness; carbonation is a bit minerally, mouthfeel is full and rather cloying due to the honeyish sweetness, which quite thickly lies on top of a very caramelly malt sweet core with slight chestnutty and thinly toasty edges. Ends with a certain metallic 'zing' on its edges, lots of residual sweetness still but the rye is vaguely noticeable as a spicy background factor, accentuated by spicy phenols in the finish. Hops provide a late, 'deep', earthy, herbal bitter aspect while everything is tied together by an afterglow of warming, bit port- or madera-ish alcohol. Bittersweetness, consisting of malts, residual sugar, hops and alcohol, lingers on for a while after swallowing, with more sweetness than bitterness. I get about the same feeling with this one that I had with other beers from this brewer: though some of his beers were rather poor, the best ones seem to land every arrow exactly in the bull's eye, at least to his own insights; if he is determined to make a barleywine in which both the rye and the honey can be tasted, then that is exactly what he does. That by itself is notable from a technical viewpoint, but like his other creations that do the same thing, this beer does not exceed that exact goal and in that sense lacks a bit of artistry and excitement. Clean I guess is the right word, but certainly enjoyable, it's just that I have the feeling this brewery is capable of more. As for style: closer to a quadrupel (La Trappe style) than to true sweet English barleywine, but in this case I'll consider that a detail of little importance.
