Brouwerij Serafijn (prev. Microbrouwerij Achilles)

Client Brewer in Heist-op-den-Berg, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Huisbrouwerij Achilles - Out of business

Established in 1999

Description
The microbrewery is founded by Achilles Van de Moer on the passion for special beers. After 7 years of trials with different beers, the decision to start a microbrewery in Itegem was made in 1999. The brand name of beers is “Serafijn”. All beers are high fermentation brews, with second fermentation in the bottle. Most of the beers are contract brewed, but some of them are also brewed at their own location.

In 2015 Achilles became part of Caupona bvba (of the Prik & Tik stores in Heist-op-den-Berg and Herselt). The brewery is now called ''Brouwerij Serafijn.'' That is the new company in Heist that houses the Serafijn beers. The former microbrewery in Itegem has been dismantled.

The beer is now brewed at the Pirlot brewery in Zandhoven.

Bottle from Dranken Geers. Very deep russet, thick rocky beige head. Some Belgian aroma. Sweetish in mouth. Some dry malt on aroma, a little lactic. Fullish in mouth, very sweet malty, milky. Bit of sting on end. A bit of syrupy alcohol. Reasonably creamy and full in mouth. Not my favourite from this brewery.

Draught Orange beer with slight haze under yellowish head, leaving rings of lace. Citrussy, little point of whtie sugar and just a little spiciness, and a whiff of liqueurish, sweetish alcohol. Sweet, very liqueurish flavour, and despite the quite sweet taste, pretty well-attenuated. Apricots flavour, warming up markedly almondy. Bit spritzy, dry, medium body. Nice variation on the Serafijn tripel (mainly different malts), fairly sweet, but inviting.

Bottled. An amber beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of fruits, and so is the flavor, leading to a slightly spicy finish. The body is a bit thin.

Bottle from Dranken Geers. Gold/amber with some floaters and big rocky head. Some spice, some syrup, some toffee. Quite an unsubtle syrupy spicy beer, with some jammy syrupy malt/alcohol. Just too syrupy really. Bit disappointing as I liked this brewery at ZBF 08. Not great.

Bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. Pours a clear copper color with a good yellow/white head. Sweet aromas of candied lighter stone fruits. Medium body with coarse carbonation. The flavor is not all that sweet, seems slightly bitter, and lightly spicy. A very tasty ale.

750 ml bottle from John’s Marketplace in Portland, OR. Very dark amber color with a frothy beige head. Aroma resembles an Abt/Quad with some citrus notes. Medium plus body with coarsely creamy carbonation. Flavor is dark fruit, dark caramel and spices like anise and citrus zest. Puts tingle all over my tongue. Finishes freshly dark and mildly bitter. Touches my palate like an Abt/Quad . It’s just delicious.
