Bottle shared thanks to Deanso. Pours very hazy brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, grain, caramel, raisin and overripe dark fruit. Flavor is over moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Fort Lapin’s second beer, with yellowish beige, creamy, stable head and dark brownish bronze colour, cloudy. Aroma of bitter chocolate, nuts, lemon zest, coffee grounds, thyme, minerals, pear, cognac and some phenols. Dates and nuts in the taste, spicy notes, light roasted bitterness, some leafy hops and whisky-like alcohol in the finish, but unfortunately a lot of solvents too, rendering it a bit wry. My expectations weren’t already too high considering their tripel and this failed to surprise me.

The tripel and first beer from this Brugues-based beer company, with thick, off-white, sticky head and lightly hazy, golden blonde robe. Aroma of unripe peach, bread, grains, coriander and cauliflower. Subdued fruitiness, rounded mouthfeel, pale malts, grainy with some DMS, coriander touch, yeasty, mild hoppiness in the finish. Cliché and not entirely flawless, redundant as there are already many tripels on the Belgian market - and many better ones than this.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a fast-dying tan head, about a centimetre tall. Aroma of pit fruits, raisins, caramel, malt, alcohol, whiskey, vanilla and some rye - nice and pungent. Full-bodied; Very rich, earthy, pungent, spicey, whiskey, juniper berries, leathery, smokey, tea-flavoured and a kick of hay on the finish - all over the map, and in a good way. Aftertaste shows the deep complexity at the centre of it all, with a rye, whiskey and grain flavour that permeates, but nuances around the bend with caster sugar, molasses, sorghum and even some brown rice noticeable. Overall, an interesting and very complex beer, throughout all layers of this one. Not as bad as I was expecting from the scores, but even knowing the scores, I was waiting to drink this one for some unknown reason. I sampled this stubby, typically belgian, 33 cL bottle purchased from The Bottle Shop in Bruges, Belgium on 14-August-2013 for €2,95 sampled back at home in Washington on the other side of the Atlantic, just over a year after purchase. Lot #00110226 (on the bottle cap) 07-June-2015 (best by?)

Bottle courtesy of Deanso. Poured a hazy straw colour with a frothy white head and some broken lace. The aroma is yeast, zesty citrus. The flavour is medium bitter light sweet with a smooth yeast, sweet malt palate. Light bodied with lively carbonation and a bubbly mouthfeel. One of the old school beers but not bad to sample.

Bottle @ Cafe Meijers. Unclear dark brown colour, off-white head. Nose is caramek malts, liquorice, brown sugar, lots of sweetness. Flavour is caramel malts, dark fruits, candied sugar. Alcohol well noticable. Meh.

Bottle @ ’t Poatersgat. Pours hazy light straw with airy white head. Clear aroma of fruit, flowers and yeast, with touches of malt. Sweetish, malty flavour, with pronounced acidic touches of fruit and flowers. Estery and hoppy notes towards the finish, which is rather rough and long-lasting. Okay.
