Sampled at Kerstbierfestival Essen 2014. Clear yellow golden color, small white head. Smell and taste malts, some fruits, herbs and spices. Reminds me a bit of glue. Average body and carbonation. Hmm not my thing I guess.

750 ml. bottle sampled @ O.B.E.R. Kestbierfestival 2014. (Thx!) Totally clear citrus golden. Nose is nasty boring plastic, dull. Taste is nasty rotting, bitter herbal, cleaning agents, plastic, bad peel,.. Bit thin. What gives? This is unpleasant to drink to say the least.

One of the more recent Brootcoorens beers, with very strong gushing, even minutes after opening the bottle, the foam still seeps out; I nevertheless managed to capture a snow white, sticky head over an ochre blonde beer carrying some distasteful, almost solid protein flakes. Fruity aroma, sourish, grainy, lemon, unripe peach, pineapple, apple peel, old ’jenever’, coriander, fresh rhubarb, grass, sour yoghurt. Neutral onset with the expected sharp carbonation, pale malts, citrus freshness, juniper berries (effectively used) clearly noticeable like in the abovementioned ’oude jenever’, sourish touch, coriander, light peppery hoppiness, warming alcohol in the finish. Probably infected but still enjoyable.

Strongish blonde with off-white, thick, moussy, unstable head and misty peach blonde colour. Aroma of peaches, dust, earth, nutmeg, cooked rhubarb, ginger, straw and lemon peel. Neutral onset, restrained fruitiness, bit citrussy, refreshing at first but quickly becoming dusty and cardboard-like, spicy on a smooth, sweetish malt base, light herbal hoppiness but not really bitter and quickly fading away. Lacks personality compared with the other Brootcoorens beers.

Commissioned by the Institut Royale de Saint-Exupéry, with very thick, creamy, yellowish white head and colour of ’old gold’, clear at first but ochre-coloured and milky when the deposit is added. Fruity, ’artisanal’ aroma, yeasty, peppery hops, cake, marmelade, apple peel, melon, tonic water, pineapple, wodka, fresh white cabbage. Fresh, dry fruity taste, strong carbo, grainy and a bit honeyish, apple, softer as more yeast enters the glass from the bottle, ending in an assertive, long, crisp, peppery hop bitterness and wodka-like warming alcohol, dry carbo effect too. Somewhat impetuous but not bad at all.

Little-known Belgian Christmas ale of limited production. Irregular, off-white head on a deeply peach blonde-coloured, cloudy beer; nose gets banana, floral hops, vanilla, caramel, pear brandy, whisky; taste fruity and yeasty with a light hop bitterness and warming alcohol in the end. The low ratings here surprise me a bit, but then I tasted it many years ago when it had just come onto the market and possibly the quality has declined since then - in other words, time for a re-rating when I find another bottle.

Artisanal Wallonian micro brew with big rocky, off-white head which quickly collapses but leaves nice lacing; colour a deep orangey peach blonde, misty but becoming more brownish (and milky) when the ’fond’ is added. Yeasty, dusty nose with fruits (orange, melon, pineapple), flowery hops, honey, white pepper, coriander, hints of rhum and sherry; taste combines a soft and mellow maltiness with a dryish, subdued fruitiness, low carbonation and therefore a bit watery, gentle spiciness and flowery, medium long finish.

75 cl. bottle sampled @ Kerstbierfestival Essen 2013. Limited to 900 litres, brewed in Feb in 2013. Yet another new BE brewery for me, I thought that I had done at least one beer from the majority of BE breweries, Essen proved me very wrong by presenting me lots of beers from breweries I had never heard of before. Clear orange / golden with no head. Smells of sweet oranges, carries an infection, slightly boozy, fruity, something off courtesy of what appears to be an infection. Taste is bitter & infected, sour tang, bitter spices, hay, berries & flat. Questionable whether or not this should be even sold but so are things with beer.

75cl bottle @ home shared with Dutchdrebus. Clear golden color, virtually no head. Smell and taste weirdness, nail polish, yuk. Oh this is unbelievable. Horrible, absolutely horrible. Drainpour.
