Description
With a foundation in homebrewing in 1992, Paul Kavulak set about to experiment within a hobby that would prove both entertaining and, at times, refreshing. Over a period of roughly 13 years, and with the able assistance of his wife Kim, this activity led to the opening of the Nebraska Brewing Company’s brewpub in Shadow Lake Towne Center in Papillion, Nebraska, on November 17, 2007. A new production brewery and taproom were opened in January of 2014. Located on the south side of the Omaha Metro, but still a large part of the Omaha Craft Beer scene.

Washington Commons, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours a copper color with a nice white head. Aroma is weed and citrus and flowers. Taste is not as hoppy as I would have expected from the aroma. That being said, the taste is still quite nice. Moderate amount of bitterness is balanced exceedingly well with the malt backbone, which is more apparent in the taste. A little bit of astringency.

750mL bottle, pours jet black with a small tan head. Aroma of deep dark roasted malts, mild whiskey barrels, a bit of chocolate and light espresso. Flavour is rich as hell, full of richly dark roasted malts, chocolate malts, whiskey barrels, and sweet brown sugar. Dense and rich as hell, very complex, and quite sweet as well as roasted. Becomes a bit cloying the more you drink, but it's a pleasure to drink.

Bottle @ Steve’s Foco, picked up at the brewery. Pours a hazy, orangish golden appearance with a white head. Light Chardonnay, somewhat oaky, floral, stone fruit, apricot aroma. Slightly tart, mild barnyard, apricot, peach, light vanilla flavor with a dry, fruity finish. Solid.

22 oz. bottle, sent from cstromberg (thanks a lot, Chris), pours a deep dark mahogany with a medium beige head. Aroma of licorice, oak barrels, cognac, dark fruits, and some Belgian candied sugar. Flavour is quite complex, with the quad notes coming through fairly prominently, along with notes of cognac, oak, and vanilla from the barrels, as well as notes licorice, mint and prominent alcohol that isn't extremely well-hidden. Alcoholic, but not too distastefully. Finishes on notes of alcohol, mint, and cognac. Solid stuff.

750 mL bottle from Nikki’s Liquors, Providence. Pours a dark brown color with a large brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, wood, leather and a strong hoppiness. The taste is chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, oak, whisky and a hoppy finish. Medium-full bodied. Nice beer.

This beer poured a hazy pale yellow-golden color with a huge foamy orange-white head that left decent lacing. The aroma was dry, tart and vinegary with faint notes of apricot, date and must. The flavor was tart and musty with notes of vinegar, faint apricot and chardonnay. Long musty vinegar and faint vague fruit finish. Medium body. Not my style.

Sampled on draft at Zeno’s in State College PA this beer poured a black color with a medium sized creamy dark brown head that left decent lacing. The aroma was dryish and malty with notes of wood, whiskey, anise and a touch of cocoa. The flavor was strong wood and whiskey and was quite bitter with notes of anise, port wine, cocoa, nut, tobacco and a strong boozy presence. Long and boozy finish on wood and whiskey. Moderately full bodied though undercarbonated. Almost a chore to drink.

Hazy gold beer, good white head. Light very dry palate. Sweet sugary fruit salad sweets. But it’s hard to swallow as the beer is so chalky dry. Finishes frothy and very dry with obvious alcohol. A bit of a mess.
