Description
in 1842 Thomas Dixon Ridley built his brewery on the banks of the River Chelmer. It was here that the Ridleys’ great tradition of brewing was born. The brewery thrived and Ridley’s beer was enjoyed at inns from Southend to Saffron Walden. Over the next 163 years six generations of Ridleys honed their skills and perfected their palettes to bring the people of Essex the best local brews, until the brewery was sold in 2005. In 2012 Nelion Ridley takes up the mantle once more, and with his craft brewery ‘Bishop Nick’, is devoted to keeping Essex ales sacred.

330ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo, thank you very much!]. Cloudy, copper-ish, brown colour with minimally late awakening, average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, sulphureous to beige head. Caramel malty and slightly vinous, fruity hoppy aroma, hints of dried fruit, raisin, white grapes peel, some toffee. Taste is slightly dry, fruity hoppy, relatively neutral, malty basis with a minimally nutty touch, some toffee, hints of dried fruit, white grapes. Slightly creamy texture, smooth and soft palate, medium to fine, soft carbonation. Relatively light, not overly complex, quite drinkable - not bad.

330ml bottle purchased from Beautiful Beers and drunk at home. Ruby/amber and clear with a film of off-white head. Strong malty aroma with boozy stone fruit, toffee, earthy notes. I was expecting it to be cloyingly sweet, but it's actually got a fine-tuned balance to it with a slightly peppery finish. It's well-made but a little bit dull. Still very drinkable.

Cask at Thomas Leaper, Derby. Pours a hazy, slow to settle, bitter brown with minimal off-white head and good lacing. Autumn fruits and malts in the aroma. In the mouth, the immediate sensation is of how sweet and watery it is. There are some autumn fruits, butter and apricots. After a while, floral hops and traces of ginger start to appear. The finish is surprisingly dry and spicy. It’s a bit of a strange IPA – may take some getting used to.
