Description
in 1842 Thomas Dixon Ridley built his brewery on the banks of the River Chelmer. It was here that the Ridleys’ great tradition of brewing was born. The brewery thrived and Ridley’s beer was enjoyed at inns from Southend to Saffron Walden. Over the next 163 years six generations of Ridleys honed their skills and perfected their palettes to bring the people of Essex the best local brews, until the brewery was sold in 2005. In 2012 Nelion Ridley takes up the mantle once more, and with his craft brewery ‘Bishop Nick’, is devoted to keeping Essex ales sacred.

Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Moderate body, oily watery texture, quite fizzy. Not bad, but too fizzy for my liking.

Can from Suffolk Food Hall, nr Ipswich. Instant coffee with hotel milk (whatever those things are called). Darkest brown. It wants to be stygian but isn't goth enough. Thick fluffy foamy beige head. A few seconds of lactose creaminess. Then molasses tinged coffee bitterness tales over. Thin. Light. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long astringent finish. Enjoyable bit really very thin. Actually, come to think of it, they mouthfeel is bubbly, fluffy.

440ml can, gift from the barman at Hop Beer Shop. Shared with Finn on a train from Colchester to Liverpool Street. Fawn-coloured head remaining over a pitch black body, lacing rings down the glass. Lightly roasted mid-sweet malts on the nose. Fine balanced taste of biscuit and chocolate malts, milk lactose backbone. Has got ending notes of roasted chocolate malts. Fine depth to it. Likable. (Train session, 23.11.2021).

Can. Light haze on this gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is light, semi dry and has a decent fine minerally crispness. Slightly thin malts, sweet enough with just a hint of grain. Hops also feel a little thin but deliver crisp pine, some slightly tangy pithy citrus and a touch of peel. Light finish leaves a mild bitter linger. It comes together into a perfectly serviceable beer that goes down easy and was just what I wanted as pre dinner appetiser.

500ml bottle delivered from Beautiful Beers, Bury St. Edmunds, and drunk at home. Dark brown, just a tiny bit translucent with a thin creamy khaki/tan head. Milk chocolate and liquorice are at the forefront of the aroma, with some blackberry notes in the background. Full sweet taste, more chocolate and liquorice here. it finishes sweet - very little bitter hoppy biteback here - but it's pleasant rather than cloying. Medium body and carbonation. An above average stout.
