Description
in 1842 Thomas Dixon Ridley built his brewery on the banks of the River Chelmer. It was here that the Ridleys’ great tradition of brewing was born. The brewery thrived and Ridley’s beer was enjoyed at inns from Southend to Saffron Walden. Over the next 163 years six generations of Ridleys honed their skills and perfected their palettes to bring the people of Essex the best local brews, until the brewery was sold in 2005. In 2012 Nelion Ridley takes up the mantle once more, and with his craft brewery ‘Bishop Nick’, is devoted to keeping Essex ales sacred.

Clear deep amber beer, decent pale tan head. Smooth palate, light and mildly dry, good fine carbonation emerging on the back end. Thin malts, a little caramel. Decent amount of raisin led ripe fruits, plenty of fruit cake and a touch of marmalade underneath. It all marries up very well with the malts. A light and semi dry finish. The best beer I can recall from this brewery. Slightly amused that the rear label refers to this as a Barleywine, yeah, a bit light to be that style, but definitely a perfect jumping off point for brewing something stronger from the same recipe. Tres drinkable.

500ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo - thanks for Mild supply and Bishop Nick supplement!]. Clear, chestnut colour with ruby shimmer and average to huge, frothy to creamy, moderately to widely lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Nutty, minimally toasty, dark malty and leafy, hoppy aroma, hints of hazelnut, Brazil nut, a touch of nougat and coffee. Taste is mildly roasty, minimally nutty, dark malty, slightly leafy hoppy, hints of coffee, a touch of Brazil nut, hazelnut, mild roasty bitterness. Minimally creamy, watery texture, dry, even minimally metallic-repellent palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation. Perfect appearance, lovely composition, superbly implemented - liked it a lot.

Cask at the Maypole, Cambridge, 19/07/22. Clear golden copper with a good sized off white head that retains well ... lacing ensues. Nose is dusty fruits, grains, straw, biscuit crumbs. Taste comprises biscuit malts, hint of cereals, brown bread, fruit esters. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light drying close. Not bad.
