Muddy brown colour with a slightly tan head which is about 1 inch tall in my goblet. Slightly yeastie aroma with a very faint sweet smell as well. Trillions of small bubbles rising on the side of the glass the way a good belgie should. The first taste is great, very complex and very malty. Definate chocolate and malt undertones with some fruit and yeast flavours hitting in the very back of my palate. This is less malty than the Westy 8 and Rochefort 10 (which I prefer) and I would say is more complex because it isn't overriden by malt. I would rank this one lower than Westy 12 (still the best beer ever in my book) but higher than both Rochefort 10 and Westy 8. A great beer for a great price. Definately try to get your hands on this beer if you don't want to spend the money on those earlier named beers or if you've tried all three of them.

Pours a dark reddish-brown with a very thick beige head. Thin lacing. Aroma is pleasantly fruity, with some malt, spice and alcohol as well. Medium-bodied and sweet, with flavors of malt, licorice, cherry and raisins. Flavor became more rich and easier to drink as it warmed. Pretty good Belgian.

Blond color, clean; too much foam. Deep aroma: malt, spices, banana. A bit sweet; boring.

Bottled. Amber coloured with rich, very lively head. Malt and some citrus in an unusually introvert aroma for a tripel. Soft mouthfeel and balanced sweetness together with a big, bready, chewy maltiness. Just a hint of coriander in an otherwise malt dominated finish.

Deep dark brown with reddish shine. Thick brown head, lacey. Nose of flambéed banana, “Baba au rhum” or “Sachertorte”, later also a bit rubbery, and chocolate. Taste is sweet, flavours of liquorice, sweet (Belgian) chocolate, overripe banana’s, plum pudding. Some people talk about figs – fresh AND sugary, I’d say yes. Very heavy mouthfeel, nearly fit enough to chew. Also an impression as from walnut oil. Keeps going for a long time. No new aftertaste, unless a fleeting cigar-ash impression. Impressive. One of Belgiums’ classics.

Very little head, immediately gone. Dark chestnut-ebony. Cold haze, clearing to red shine. Thick brown candi-sugar, honey and gingerbread whilst pouring, later sugar, honey and caramel. Also something bitter-spicey. Yeast from St. Bernardus rules. Bitter start and surrounding around the thick dark malts in the taste. Retronasal sweetness becomes really honey-ish and something earthy appears. Mouthfeel gives heavier impression than expected from 6.7 ABV. Restrained fermentation? Alcohol impression all the same. Impressive for its relative ‘low’ ABV. I didn’t know the Dutch market was still large enough to accommodate a special product.

Dark hazy orange. Slight white head. Nose is orangey, orange peel, pepper and coriandre. taste: nice orange-Curaçoa. Spicey on slightly sour-sweet base. Clinging mouthfeel, just a bit dry. yes, this is the original Hoegaarden from Celis. Congrats Pierre!

Bottled. Pale orange and cloudy with smallish head. Orange, peach and curacao aroma. Pleasantly spicy and flavourful, is that seville orange peels which are so obvious? Medium dry and really well balanced with a touch of bitterish spices in the finish. A top wit!

This smells and tastes a lot like pez, and I LOVES me some pez! Big malt nose, hazy brown, highly carbonated. Yeasty flavor with lots of fruits - raisins, bananas, cherries, etc. The marriage of beer and candy. Reminds me quite a bit of Westy 8, but not quite as good.

[re-rate - it’s been a while since I’ve had this, and it seems a lot more astrigent than it used to be - the flavors are also a little less balanced, with sweetness bordering on cloying - still a tasty belgian, but not great] Dark, dark ruby in color, with a frothy, cappuchino-like head and lovely yeasty aroma, with hints of chocolate and raisins. Heavy carbonation with fine suspended particles. Medium to full body, nice creamy mouthfeel dispite the high carbonation. The flavor has some spice to it, with fruity flavors from apples to bananas. Lots of malts come through near the end, which serve to cut the alcohol presense that manifests after having the beer in your mouth for a few seconds. Malts dominate the finish, with a nice caramel and toffee flavor. Some of the banana flavor sticks around at the end as well. A nice Belgian, Trois Pistoles meets Westy 8.
