Description
Brewery Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium (1471). In its current form the brewery exists since 1872 when the Van Breedam family bought the brewery and built a modern brewery with a steam boiler. Nowadays it is still a family brewery that has been brewing beer in the Groot Begijnhof in Mechelen for 5 generations. Over the years, Het Anker grew into an internationally acclaimed brewery. The old recipes are still the basis of the brewing process and a variety of hops and herbs flavor the beers.

The brewhouse consists of three kettles from 1946 and a wort filter from 2014. The kettles are made of red copper and are “hammered” by hand into the existing shapes. The capacity is 3000 kg deposit. In the past, brews of 250 to 300 hl of lager were produced with this. Today we brew 110 hl per brew since the current beers are of a much higher density.

Bottle, 75cl corked and caged. Pours a hazy brown body with a nice beige head leaving some cute lacings. Prunes, alcohol, sherry, sugar and some spices in the aroma. The flavor follows the same path, with a lasting alcohol and a slowly growing bitterness. Lasting finish with a nice bitterness. Warming, full-bodied mouthfeel. I’m not sure if this beer is very suited for cellaring, but it’s a really lovely one. Rating: 8-4-8-4-17-4.1. (080730)

Bottle, 75cl corked, 2004 vintage cellared for three years. (RBNAG 07) Pours an orange-brown, almost clear body with a big, dense beige head. Has the lovely, sweetish aroma with dried fruits, notes of tea and spices that I remember from last sample. The flavor is almost as wonderful, with sweetness, malty beef-stock, spice notes and some tea-like hints. Full, sugary mouthfeel. It’s a beautiful beer, maybe a bit on the sweet side, but I like it! Rating: 8-4-8-4-16. Leaving the old rating as that was from a fresher bottle.

Bottled, vintage 2004. Brown with a light tan head. Sweet, fruity, malty aroma with some alcohol. Flavor is much the same, with the caramel-sweetness dominating. Maybe too sweet. Warming sweet and bitter aftertaste. Gorgeous beer with a little too much sweetness. (051028)

Bottle. Rich dark brown/amber with a nice beige head. Spicey aroma (Xmas spices) with a bit of plum/fig and malt. Smells like an xmas puds. Rich, fruity, spicy, malty flavor - again xmas puds though banana starts to come through to take away that association (a bit too much banana). Velvelty smooth mouthfeel. A bit of alacohol wamring comes though. Very enjoyable.

2004 Bottle: Sample at WFM. Dark brown with a thin beige head and decent lacing. Lots of sweet malts and spices in the nose. The body is pretty chewy with more sweet malt, ginger and fruit flavors. The finish is flavorful, with more spices and a nice woody character. The alcohol is kept in check very well too, making for an enjoyable brew from start to finish.

Small yellow-brown head, fast gone over deep dark brown beer with red shine. Alcohol, cheese (Leidse orKomijnekaas), dark malts, chocolate, and tons of liquorice, drop . This is pure, spiced, japwater , tisane from liquorice sweets. With some burnt malts, and who knows, some lost hops, for a bitterish counterweight. Some dry, slightly bitter rootspice, Buisman aroma, and fennel/aniseed - and then kümmel/cumin retronasal, coming on strongly warming up. Thinner than most Anker beers. Some slickness, slightly oily, and alcohol is not quite hidden. My under-standing colleague calls it a "one-off". I would rather speak about an "off one", certainly to ’t Anker standards.

Big, offwhite, creamy head with large bubbles; body clear dark red. Deep aroma of caramel, bread, and spice. Taste is broad and sweet, with some alcohol heat, settling into an aftertaste with faint roastiness and lots of spice. Licorice. Nice balancing aftertaste, which lingers. Excellent! One of the best beers made.

An amber beer with a huge slightly pink head. The aroma is spicy and hoppy - I pick up coriander, figs, and oranges. The flavor is sweet woody with a herbal note mixing in with som fruit, where I pick out oranges. The mouthfeel is very smooth, and the end woody dry.

(bottle) Cloudy dark orange/amber colour with a frothy off-white medium head. Fruity (grapefruit, lemon peel) aroma with milk chocolate and a dense spicy note. Bitter flavour, medium body, fizzy carbonation. Initial malty and fruity with a bitterfruity note, that lingers into the end. A good one.
