Description
Brewery Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium (1471). In its current form the brewery exists since 1872 when the Van Breedam family bought the brewery and built a modern brewery with a steam boiler. Nowadays it is still a family brewery that has been brewing beer in the Groot Begijnhof in Mechelen for 5 generations. Over the years, Het Anker grew into an internationally acclaimed brewery. The old recipes are still the basis of the brewing process and a variety of hops and herbs flavor the beers.

The brewhouse consists of three kettles from 1946 and a wort filter from 2014. The kettles are made of red copper and are “hammered” by hand into the existing shapes. The capacity is 3000 kg deposit. In the past, brews of 250 to 300 hl of lager were produced with this. Today we brew 110 hl per brew since the current beers are of a much higher density.

Dark red-amber colour. Aroma shows caramel, cherries and brown sugar. A little bit thin, though, but at least there’s some complexity - cherries, raisins, metal, toffee and oranges. Hint of yeast.

2007-08-02, draught at Moeder Lambic, Bruxelles, as Margriet, 6-4-6-3-13=32
Misty blond color; thick creamy head. The aroma is delicate, perfumy, lightly fruity, light flowers (lily), positively soapy. Medium-light body structure, some malt flavor, light spices, quite sweet front with a drier aftertaste; correct bitterness, but a bit short. Refreshing.

2004-06-03, draught, 6-3-6-3-12=30
Hazy blond color. Quite good (but simple) blond beer. A bit fruity. Reasonable hopping.

Dark amber color. Some aroma of candi sugar and caramel. Some malt and caramel, no sourness, too much bitter.

Bottle: Poured a golden hazy beer with a huge head with perfect retention. Aroma is quite complex with a mix of yeast, hops, malts and something sweet like some orange. Taste is just incredible with a perfect mix between sweetness (this beer gotta have some candi sugar in it) and the hops. Alcohol is not noticeable at all, which is great when you have a 9% ABV beer. Overall, this is just wonderful, probably one the best discovery from my recent trip to Belgium.

This beer pours a murky orange/red with quickly dissipating carbonation. Aroma of caramel, toffee, cinnamon, raisin, apple peel, and toasted marshmallow. The flavor is quite impressive with tangy toffee, raisin, chocolate, and rich caramely bread. Ethanol highlights the finish, playing off the sweet flavors nicely. Not as good as their Grand Cru but still a fine beer.

Bottled, 2001 vintage. Thanks Bov!
Deep ruby, beige head. Fruity bubblegum aroma. Richly malty with dense soft mouthfeel. Relatively dry. Complex and very flavourful, notes of caramel and disturbing green apples. A balanced Belgian beer, playing in the super premium league.

A favorite for both my wife and me. We have had it numerous times from a bottle and several times on draft at the Sharp Edge in Pittsburgh.+++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer pours a hazy red/brown with a large tan head. The aroma is malty and very spicy. The flavor is malty with elements of caramel, molasses, nut and chocolate. The flavor is complex and changes as it lingers on the palate.

2003 edition. This beer ended up being an incredible pairing with Unibroue 10. For some reason I was expecting a lighter-bodied beer, but this Grand Cru poured deep red-brown and somewhat cloudy with a medium-light off-white (light tan?) head. Aroma was very potent and interesting- I picked up tangy, rotting fruit (not in a bad sense, of course), bubblegum, and even peat. Awesome flavor profile- bubblegum and red licorice/strawberry candy flavors pierce the toasty body. A touch of cinnamon, chocolate, and apple peel join alcohol in the finish. This reminds me in a sense of Avery The Beast (with much lower ABV). Its relatively heavy body, rich flavor, and nice blend of sweet and dry notes puts this beer in the upper echelon of Belgian Strongs. Trying this back-to-back with Unibroue 10 was quite a treat for the senses- two beers with amazing, complex flavor profiles.

One of the best examples of the Tripel style and a world classic beer that I wish I could afford to keep around more often. +++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer pours a nice clear golden color with a large white head. The aroma is strong spiciness with a bit of fruit. A strong peppery spicy flavor with some sweetness and tartness added follows. Thick on the tongue. Mild spiciness lingers on the palate. A marvelous Triple and a world classic.

A red-brown beer with a small fast disappearing head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and prunes. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of the alcohol and roasted malt before an OK bitterness sets in which finally gives way to a dry woody finish. A good beer, but not as good as the christmas version.
