Not as fruity, sweet, or complex as some others of the style, but still a very good beer. Substantial body. There is a thick white head that lasts so long I was getting impatient to drink the cloudy, dark orange beer. Powerful aroma of sweet fruit. Flavor is primarily sweet with a bit of the alcohol coming through. Sweet malt in the finish. This can’t stand up to Tripel Karmeliet but is vastly superior to Westmalle and many others.

Sampler from bottle at Binny’s, Orland Park, Yep, a dark brown color that gives no clue as to the stuff within. Taste is sweet; dark, but not roasty. Has an excellent all-around "beer" taste. Can also pick out a few deliberately staled hops.

750 ml bottle, corked "champagne" style. ABV is 10.5%. Deep chestnut colour, large light tan head, nice lacing. Malty sweet and spicy aroma - aniseed, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, cloves(?) Notes of oak and leather too. Flavour is also dominantly malty sweet (too sweet) with caramel and spices, a certain hoppy bite too. Alcohol is evident, but not overwhelming. A fairly complex beer, but too much malty sweetness keeps me from giving it a top rating.

Bottle Clear; deep amber (almost black) body. Lightly brown, frothy head. Nose of esters, port (red and white) and straw malts. Lightly sweet initial, lightly bitter initial flavour. Moderately sweet, ligthly bitter finish. Somewhat spicy flavour and lightly alcoholic, causing a very warm mouthfeel. Easily fits into the Gouden Carolus-series, but kind a weird for a Easter beer, because you don’t think of the spring when you drink thisone, you’d rather think of Winter, as Caeser mentions. But all in the end and these latter irrelevant remarks not taken in account, this is a very lovely strong ale.

Bottle. Light amber color with a big white head. Lots of yeast in aroma along with apple, banana, spice, and sweet malt. Sweet malt/candy sugar flavor with spice and lemon. High carbonation. Alcohol present.

Bottle, RBESG 2005 Grand Tasting. Golden brown colour. Vinous aroma, oaky and sherry notes. Oaky flavour, brandy notes.

Bottle. 2004 Vintage. Dark mahogony beer with a big beige head. Aroma of dates/figs, sweet malt, and some spice. Rich malty flavor with date and plum fruits, spice, yeast, brown sugar, sand some christmas spice. Nice and complex. Some alcohol in aroma and flavor.

(Bottle 33 cl) Fully golden, slightly hazy with a tall and frothy head. Yeast sediment. Very potent brew with a prominent, warming alcohol glow. Yeasty, spicy and very malty with a pronounced sweetness. Nice and wellmade Tripel. 050802

(Bottle 75 cl) Name on label reads "Mechelse Reuzenbier". Pilsener golden, slightly hazy with a huge and stable head, that never really collapses. Extremely potent, solid and full-bodied beer with lots of malt, sweetness and (well hidden) alcohol. Fruity and yeasty nose. Very complex flavours that almost "explode" in your mouth leaving you with all sorts of wonderful impressions. 290602

(Bottle 75 cl) Vintage 1999 at 8,5% ABV. I bought this at the brewery at the day of it’s release. Great show with some sort of reenactment of the arrival of Keizer Karel in Mechelen. Wonder if that happens every year at this beers release or if was a one off? Anyways, this is an excellent brew. Dark brown with a huge, frothy, light-brown head. Extremely full-bodied, full of good ingredients. Loads of roasted malt with notes of syrup and dried fruits - dates in particular. Sweetness indeed, but more fruity and fresh - which is unusual for it’s kind. a great beer indeed. 070500
