Description
Brewery Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium (1471). In its current form the brewery exists since 1872 when the Van Breedam family bought the brewery and built a modern brewery with a steam boiler. Nowadays it is still a family brewery that has been brewing beer in the Groot Begijnhof in Mechelen for 5 generations. Over the years, Het Anker grew into an internationally acclaimed brewery. The old recipes are still the basis of the brewing process and a variety of hops and herbs flavor the beers.

The brewhouse consists of three kettles from 1946 and a wort filter from 2014. The kettles are made of red copper and are “hammered” by hand into the existing shapes. The capacity is 3000 kg deposit. In the past, brews of 250 to 300 hl of lager were produced with this. Today we brew 110 hl per brew since the current beers are of a much higher density.

Sampled draught at Akkurat, Stockholm.
Hazy golden, small creamy head.. Light citrusy nose. Malt and vanilla flavour, soft mouthfeel, balanced sweetness. Velvetty honey finish. Subtile, but with great quality.

Dark amber color. Very good beer, sweet, with loads of caramel and quite strong liquorice; when warmer gets more complexity: Christmas spices, milk chocolate, chocolate cake…

I have managed to sample this beer from a bottle several times and each time it raises some in my esteem. Imagine my joy when upon entering my favorite bar I find that they have it on draft. I could not resist.+++ This wonderful brew poured a dark black color with no head to speak of. The aroma was sour fruit and hops with a hint of smoke. The flavor was fruity, slightly sour, slightly malty with a hint of smoke. The fruit lingers on the finish. Absolutely fabulous!

Dark red-amber colour. Aroma shows caramel, cherries and brown sugar. A little bit thin, though, but at least there’s some complexity - cherries, raisins, metal, toffee and oranges. Hint of yeast.

2007-08-02, draught at Moeder Lambic, Bruxelles, as Margriet, 6-4-6-3-13=32
Misty blond color; thick creamy head. The aroma is delicate, perfumy, lightly fruity, light flowers (lily), positively soapy. Medium-light body structure, some malt flavor, light spices, quite sweet front with a drier aftertaste; correct bitterness, but a bit short. Refreshing.

2004-06-03, draught, 6-3-6-3-12=30
Hazy blond color. Quite good (but simple) blond beer. A bit fruity. Reasonable hopping.

Bottle: Poured a golden hazy beer with a huge head with perfect retention. Aroma is quite complex with a mix of yeast, hops, malts and something sweet like some orange. Taste is just incredible with a perfect mix between sweetness (this beer gotta have some candi sugar in it) and the hops. Alcohol is not noticeable at all, which is great when you have a 9% ABV beer. Overall, this is just wonderful, probably one the best discovery from my recent trip to Belgium.

This beer pours a murky orange/red with quickly dissipating carbonation. Aroma of caramel, toffee, cinnamon, raisin, apple peel, and toasted marshmallow. The flavor is quite impressive with tangy toffee, raisin, chocolate, and rich caramely bread. Ethanol highlights the finish, playing off the sweet flavors nicely. Not as good as their Grand Cru but still a fine beer.
