Description
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Dark reddish brown and hazy. Estery, smokey aroma. Well drinkable with nice wheat and banana flavour. A balanced and unusual beer.

Big beer! Lots of malt, smoke and alcohol. Lingering sausage like smokey flavour. This beer is not exactly allabout balance, it's about new taste experiances.

The first time I tasted this VERY smoky beer I hated it. Acouple of years later I tasted it again and thought: Hmmm, it wasnt THAT bad. So I tasted it again and thought: HELLO this is GOOD!!. Now it's one of my favourites. So folks, it's never too late to learn to like something.

Dark brown and cloudy. Thick head. Fairly yeasty with a mellow smoke nose. Yeasty, smokey palate. Some banana in the background. Doesn’t really come together for me.

This is still something I'll need to get used to, if possible. Too much liquid smoke flavor.

There are few pleasures in this world like Schlenkerla Marzen from the wood. Oh sure, I’ll take the bottles, but let’s not kid ourselves, those are only a 4.7 or 4.8. When you go to the ausschank in the Bamberg Altstadt, it’s different. The glass lands in front of you. The appearance of the beer is a unique reddish-brown, nice and dark with a thick but not overstated head. The aroma is pure smoke goodness, nothing more nothing less. The palate shows incredible balance. Yes, the smoke is huge, but so are the chewy, earthy malts. The wood finishes the beer, lending it impeccable balance and drinkability. There’s no need for writing expansively about the nuances and the subtleties...this is simply the perfect beverage. Perfect looks, great aroma, great flavour, perfect balance...finishes brilliantly. The most perfect beer on the planet, on gravity from the wood like real beer should be.

Rerate deleting my naive first rating and first experience with smoked beer. Aroma milder than I remembered, campfire for sure, make some smoked sausage, or the clothes of someone who spent too much time near the fireplace. Flavor less sweet than I expected for a marzen, smoked or not. Actually the palate was somewhat light and only semi-sweet. I would say smooth, not watery, though. Smoke presence clearly predominates. Attractive dark ruby almost purple color, firm creamy head.
