In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Bottle (Cellars Bentleigh). Dirty amber with a 2cm off white head. Light sweet smoke, bread, soft herbal notes. Lively, maybe a bit too fizzy. More delicate smoke works because the beer lacks the grunt of the normal Märzen. Still, pretty deep with a long, smokey bitter finish.

Wunderschön gülden und weitestgehend klar mit feiner Perlage. Obenauf eine weiße, mittelporige, sehr kompakte und gut haltbare Schaumkrone. In der Nase tummeln sich selchig-rauchige Noten, welche sich mit zarten Fruchtnuancen paaren. Im Antrunk vernimmt man sofort die selchig-rauchigen, aber hellen Malznoten mit angenehmer Rezenz, leichter Frucht und zart grasig-heuiger Hopfenherbe. Leichter Körper mit guter und frischer Rezenz, leicht seidig-sämiger Textur und angenehmer Trockenheit. Geschmacklich und aromatisch setzt sich der grundsätzlich leichte Charakter mit seiner bestimmten Rauchnote und den zarten Fruchtnuancen schön fort. Auch wenn es für den ungeübten Bierfreund etwas einfach und anders wirken muss, muss man schon sagen, dass die Filigranität und das Zusammenspiel der Aromen ausgesprochen gut, harmonisch und regelrecht raffiniert erscheint. Die Trinkbarkeit und die vielfältige Einsetzbarkeit als Speisebegleiter (von Salaten und Grillgemüse über leichte Fisch- oder Geflügelgerichten vom Grill oder geräuchert bis hin zu wenig gewürztem roten Fleisch) ist dabei absolut vielfältig und zeigt die Allrounder-Qualitäten diese Bieres. Im Nachtrunk wirken in erster Linie die rauchigen Malznoten und die zart trockene Hopfenherbe gut und lange nach.
Fazit: Grätzer... ein sehr interessanter und ausgesprochen toller Stil!

500ml bottle. Pours a clear reddy amber with a beige head. Aroma of smoked malts, woody, bacon/ham. Taste is very smoky as expected, smoked malts, woody, bacon, ham, caramel, a bit sweet, light bitterness. at 8% it's stronger than the rest of the range but not overly noticeable. Medium bodied. Lovely stuff.

500 ml can. Pale amber color, clear, with a tall head. Typical smoky nose, without the malty depth, caramel or chocolate nites. Quite bitter and dry, smoky of course , with bread and crackers. Light body. Overall impression is Dry and bitter and lacking the sweetness and depth of the Marzen. Good, but not as enjoyable.
