Description
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Bottle. Sweet smoky aroma - smells like smoked ham to me (especially the German variety). Brown cloudy color. Smoked meat flavor smacks you in the face - can just tell this is a Weizen. Addendum: bottle aged 2 1/2 years - aroma slightly mellowed - a little sweeter, a little less smoky. Flavor much mellower - slightly sweet smoked meat flavor but much more subdued. Definitely a great beer to age. Man, I’m glad I saved some of these.

Thanks for the beer skaughty! The last Smoked beer I had was the Alaskan Smoked Porter. Damn that was a good beer. This? Not so much. The beer is a nice dark brown color with a medium beige head and thin lacing. The aroma is equal parts ashtray smoke and Purina Beggin’ Strips. Medium-bodied with a very smoky character, as a matter of fact it dominates everything else in the beer. The finish is more of the same. I think my wife’s question of why I smelled like a cigarette (I don’t smoke) after drinking it about sums it up. It’s just too much.

Etwas schokoladig. Lecker! 12/12/12/12/13/12

Deep dark brown color with a light tan head that lasts well. Smoke and malt in the aroma. The flavor is sweet malt with smoke. Smoke again in the finish. Any more smoke and this would be annoying, but as it is, it is perfect. Well done brew.

Bottle. Definitely gives the drinker what it says. Strong smoked ham aroma, dark brown color, and a strong smoky flavor (reminiscent of hickory smoke or liquid smoke (tm).

Cloudy nutbrown color, big off-white head. Aroma is heavy smoked, banana and wheat. Taste is not as heavy smoked as i expected, but it’s more like a soft hefeweizen, sweet banana, some bitter bacon but not much. Lingering palate.

Dark cloudy brown. The cream colored head is huge; long lasting and rocky. Flavor of light wheat is there, followed by the smoke that has additional flavors of wood and roasted wheat. Didn’t like it very much when it was cold, improved at room temp.

The aroma is of tar and rope - much like the Märzen. The color is amber and it has a beutiful head. The flavor is lovely of smoke, tar, rope, and malt. A very nice beer.

Fully hazy dark amber; amberish head, stable. Smoked ham, open woodfire, roasted chestnut, and something else - I'd say wheat, but that's foreknowledge. And again fried bacon rinds. Taste is a sourish version of fried bacon rinds. the sourishness this time is unmistakably wheat. Well-bodied, not very refreshing. I just love Rauchbier. I'm somewhat less taken with Weizen, but a good refreshing Hefe is never amiss. But the combination... it just keeps clashing. Each to his own.
