Westerham Brewery Company has revived many of the much-loved flavours of the old Black Eagle Brewery, which closed in 1965 following the catastrophic consolidation by the ‘Big Brewers’ in the 1950’s. The yeast is re-cultured from the Black Eagle strain.

April 2015: Cask half pint, as Westerham 1730 Pale Ale, at The Shakespeare (a Taylor Walker pub), London Victoria. Golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma, a little fruit. Moderately fruity flavour, quite well hopped. Smooth and nice to drink.

Cask at The Park Tavern, Eltham. Black pour with a tan head. Coffee, brown sugar, toffee & dark chocolate nose. Taste is coffee, liquorice toffee, dark chocolate. Bit of a bitter kick in the close.

Can bought at NT Polesden Lacey, nr Leatherhead. Aroma has sweet juicy berries and rye. Clear chestnut. Thick foamy off-white head. Light-medium bitter. Spice. Grains. Rye. Sour berry edge. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft carbonation, a slight prickle to it. Long dry slightly astringent finish. Enjoyable. Rustic.

Appearance is pitch black, with a clingy light brown head. Aroma is lots of chocolate, dark malt, cocoa, fudge, caramel, more chocolate. Taste is chocolate, bitter dark malt, burnt treacle, dark chocolatey finish.

Bottle (from Ales by Mail). Copper colour with a small off-white head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is toffee, some floral, nutty and wooden tones with mild herbal elements too. Flavour is nice sweet nutty malts, caramel and some floral, wooden and herbal tones with mild spiciness as well. Smooth.

Can from the brewery online shop. Appearance - golden amber and clear. Fluffy suds on top. Nose - definitely some rye spice going on with some cake, dried fruit and caramel. Taste - dried orange, cake and rye spice again. Palate - light to medium bodied, roasty and spicy finish. Overall - enjoyed this one!
