About
The Rodenbach family established the brewery in 1821 in the West Flemish town of Roeselare. The beer owes it unique quality and masterful character to the oak casks in which it matures. Rodenbach is the archetypical Flemish red-brown ale from West Flanders. Recognised as a regional product, it is probably the most award-winning beer in the world.

On tap, Christian IV, Odense. Clear reddish brown, with a small creamy off-white head. Rich aroma of dark sugar, spice, malt and of course, that indescribeable, vinegar-like bret. Sweet flavour with acid balance. Pleasant malt background. Lovely beer, if slightly on the sweet side for my taste.

11.2oz bottle poured dark amber with off white to pink-ish head. I get a big fruity aroma of cherries, sour powder cherry candy and cherry flavored cough drops. Wow, the flavor has lots of lively fresh tasting sweet cherries and soda like sour cherries. Cherries. Cherries. Cherries. A little too much like a cherry soda than a beer and no real yeasty mustiness I thought this beer might have.

Deep red coloured body with hardly any head at all. Aroma of sour cherries, sweet sugars and a bit of malt. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong cherry sweetness up front fading to a pleasant sour feeling. Mild malt was noticeable and a bit of spice also detected - but this one is all about the cherries and the sweetness. Overall, I liked the beer a lot and thought it was a good take on the style. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Clarendon (Arlington), Virginia on 09-July-07.

Pour is a dark red with a small tan head. Aroma is deffinatly vinegar with some cherry and wood smoke. Flavor is bitter with notes of cherry and oak. Almost like a merlot. A good example of the style for me as this is not so sour it is undrinkable. A good starter beer for this style.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Dark reddish brown colour with notes of copper. Foamy beige head. Acidic (or rather lactic), fruity, vinous nose with distinct notes of balsamic vinegar, wild berries, black-currant and amazing woody aromas reminiscent of old Speyside whiskies (Glen Grant or possibly Longmorn) with more than 30 years in sherry casks. Acidic, tart, fruity and vinous taste with sweet-and-sour notes of rhubarb and black-currant. Lots of balsamic vinegar. Slightly toasty, bitter-sweet finish. Not very bitter at all. Brilliant balance. Absolutely amazing beer. Luckily, Palm has managed to maintain the high quality after moving the brewing. Impressive. Great beer, a true classic!

Flavor is standard, sour with some balsamic vinegar and just a little fruit sweetness, raspberry maybe. Flavor is lightly sour, not as sour as the grand cru. Sadly the palate is very thin, this beer is just too light in body. Joewbrew knows the Duchesse de Bourgogne is better but he won’t admit it.

Bottle. Creamy off-white mostly lasting head. Amber colour. Light malty moderate hoppy sour aroma. Moderate sweet light bitter flavor. Very vinius acetic flavor with cherry notes. Average finish. Oily palate.

Bottle (12oz). Sour cherry and malt aroma - light mustiness. Medium brown color with small film of a head. Tart sourness hits the tongue immediately followed by a musty light cherry flavor.

Bottle. Pour is a darkish red brown with a cotton candy colored head that dies back quickly. Aromas are of tart cherries. I’m just not sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, it is kind of pleasant... but on the other, it is more like a cherry soda than a beer and there is a bit of a metallic note in the background that throws off any pleasantness in the aftertaste. Then again, it has a niced balanced cherry presence that is nice. Then again, at under 4% can I take it seriously?
