Description
In 2011 we Howling Hops reopened the Cock tavern on Mare street as Hackney’s first brewpub. The brewery expanded a few times but still couldn’t really keep up with the demand. So in 2015 the brewery moved to the current address in the heart of Hackney Wick.

Howling Hops brew bold, modern, uncompromised, flavoursome, generously hopped beers. All our beers are unfiltered, unpasteurised and suitable for vegans. We still stick to our early philosophy of ‘make some interesting beer’, although not every one is different these days. We have a core of 4 beers that we brew regularly, a couple of beers we brew seasonally and every 3 or 4 weeks we brew a different single batch beer.

33cl bottle shared with jmgreenuk. Thick tan head. Clear black pour. Nice chocolate taste. Lovely and smooth. Nice brew.

Bottle at JF’s, liberated from the Cock, 30/03/13 - hops as listed above. Murky dark amber with a thin tan head that retains well. Nose is pine, mineral notes, grapefruit, bitter orange, tropical fruits. Taste comprises bitter grapefruit, light pineapple, touch of caramel, orange. Medium bodied with hop bitterness in the finish. Decent!

Bottle split at JF’s, picked up from the Cock, 30/03/13. Bottle state - Centennial/Columbus/Cascade/Citra. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that clears to the edge and leaves a thin film. Nose carries dark malts, hoppy note, orange, grapefruit, background chocolate. Taste comprises dark malt, hops, grapefruit, mineral notes, cocoa, orange pith. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, dry in the finish with some light hop bitterness. Great stuff but would scare the bejesus out of many ’trad’ mild drinkers!

Bottle at the John=Jim Den Haag tasting, Den Haag. Bought at Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a dark mahogany with a thin bubbly tan head. The aroma is peaty, smoky and earthy. The flavour is medium to strong bitter, smoky, hoppy with lots of dry spice on the palate. A super beer. I can’t wait for more from this brewery.

Sampled from bottle @ Jim is John tasting. Dark brown to black color with a reddish hue. Small to medium sized beige head. Aroma of malts, smoked malts and a bit roasty. Taste malts, roastyness, balanced smokeyness, bitter. Lovely beer. Medium body, medium carbonation.

Cask at the Cock Tavern, 30/03/13. Hazed pale golden with a thin white head that clrs to the edge and forms a film. Nose is hops, pine, tropical fruit notes, grapefruit, mango, fresh and fruity. Taste comprises much the same, bitter grapefruit, fresh juicy mango, light pine, hops, sugards. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, bitterness in the finish. A cracking APA!

Cask (gravity) @ 29th Pigs Ear Beer and Cider Festival 2012, at The Round Chapel in Hackney, London, England.Clear dark black brown color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate - milk chocolate, vanilla, artificial. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20121205]
