Description
Hop Back Brewery Ltd was formed in October 1991 by John Gilbert and we moved to a small industrial unit in Downton, just south of Salisbury. After refurbishment and installation, brewing on the new 20 barrel plant started in June 1992.

In 2012 Hop Back celebrated its 25th birthday, having retained John’s original philosophy and passion for beers that he would want to drink.

Cask gravity at The George, Bethersden, Summer BF 2006. Deep ruby/black beer with thin beige head. Attractive aroma of smokey chocolate and roasted malts. Smooth in mouth with creamy choc finish. Bit of dryness. Stunning stout. Even some sourness too.

Cask. Slightly hazy, orange/golden beer with a small white head. The aroma is mostly citrus, with a dishwashing-soap like twist, but not in an un-pleasant way. The flavor is almost nothing but citrus. Thin and soapy mouthfeel and an astringent and slightly sour finish. Way too much citrus to suit my taste. Rating: 5-3-5-2-10-2.5. 060713

Bottle. A hazy, golden beer topped by a decent white head. Citrusy nose, citrus peel mostly, and a base of pale malts. The flavor has pale malts to support the citrusy bitterness. Some notes of blackcurrant chime in too. Good bitterness in the end. Medium body. Overall, a quenching and quite nice beer, but not my choice of hops. 091226

Cask at the Kings Arms Stoborough, Dorset, 22-06-06. Can’t believe that I hadn’t rated this before considerring that it has long been a favourite of mine. Pours aa it say’s quite straw coloured not an obvious aroma but some malt edtected with the more present hops. Great tasting beer that has good bitterness levels, hops that are ever present and for it’s strength it drinks far too easily. Great brew that has just celebrated it’s eighteenth birthday apparently.

(Cask at Holly Bush, Hampstead, London 21 Apr 2006) Golden yellow colour, not much head. Fruity and hoppy nose with citrus (lemon, mandarin), a bit sweet. Taste is fruity with lots of citrus, starts rather sweet, but ends with a dry, sharp finish. Light body. Nice hops, but a bit thin.

Casked. Yellow golden colour, small white head. Barnyard, fruitish and malts in aroma. Grassy and fruity flavour. Aftertaste is fruity and candyish. The grassyness in it sucks. 5 3 6 3 11

Bottled. Golden colour, foamy mediumsized head. Vegetables, sweetness and otherwise weird aroma too. Juniper, hops and malts in aroma. Luckily a bit better flavour than aroma. More harsh overall than the casked version. (4 2 5 3 10)

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours pale golden with a slight haze and a creamy, white head leaving some laces. Vaguely citrusy nose - perhaps from the lemon grass? Rather light body with a malty touch and a dry finish. Not particularly spicy - more like your typical Golden Ale. 090406

Casked. Dark golden colour, mediumsized off-white head, which is foamy, but has "big bubbles" in it also. Fruity and wooden aroma. Flavour is sweet fruitish hops along with caramellish hints. Mouthdrying and a bit papery finish.
