Description
Harvey's is the oldest independent Brewery in Sussex. Founded by John Harvey in 1790 it still remains a privately owned family business, with the eighth generation currently working there. We pride ourselves on the craft of our brewing, environmental credentials, local distribution, local charitable activities and loyal staff. Widely known for our Best Bitter, our beers and pubs can be found in and around the South East. As a Regional Brewer we tend not distribute further than 60 miles from the brewery premises, however our beers can be purchased via our online shop shop.harveys.org.uk and at our Brewery Shop in Lewes. 2000 bottle, sampled April 2002: My cork appeared fresh, but this beer was completely still. I don't mind that so much, but the flavors became so dense that in the end it wasn't palatable. Just a hint of carb would have improved it tremendously (ala DfH World Wide Stout - the only beer remotely similar, yet this is not as sweet). Appearance was a dark opaque brown with red highlights. No head, no lacing (not even a hint of either). Aroma was wonderful, fruity and complex: dark fruits, plus, dates, vanilla, tobacco. Flavor was similar, but as I said, dense, and difficult to isolate flavors, with a heavy thick mouthfeel that coated the tongue. Moderately cloying. Medium bitterness, with some roasted notes. This was difficult to finish, and was a disappointment. I'll try again, hoping for a good seal.

Fairly light and low alc for a barleywine, but still a pleasant malty strong ale. Beautiful deep red-amber color with thin long-lasting head. Rich, complex fruity aroma: pear, peach, squash, vanilla. Flavor is strong and warming with a solid hop bitterness, and fruity malts. Smooth tobacco finish. Smooth light carbonation, full, mouth-filling flavor. Complex and filling, a real winter warmer.

This is very complex - treacly, with port-like flavours and aromas, a rich dark fruit character, an oily body, and a touch of dark chocolate as well. A top five porter.

There are two versions of this beer - one brewed in Estonia by Tartu, the other in England by Harvey. If you've ever had the regular Harvey Porter, then you know they brew a mean porter. This is no exception. An excellent of example of the Baltic Porter style, with tremendous depth and complexity

Appropriately opaque black. Sweetish scent, like an Imperial stout almost. Disappointingly thin and watery, with a slight sweet flavor. As it approached room temp, a caramel-malt flavor became much more developed, but it remained thin and unappetizing. Its drinkable, but I chose not to finish it.
