Description
Averbode Abbey beer is a tribute to history: from the 14th to the early 20th century the abbey was already actively engaged in brewing. For the production of the ‘new’ abbey beer the abbey opted for Brouwerij Huyghe, which also has a rich history of its own.
However, there are also similarities. Respect for the environment and society play a central role in the brewery. Indeed, Brouwerij Huyghe is the only brewery in Belgium to produce the Mongoza-beer that has received the fair trade, gluten free and organic label. It also actively invests in a smaller footprint and social employment.

33cl Bottle from Prik&Tik Pauwels. Just slightly hazy golden colour, enormous white head. Aroma of lemons, light floral, yeast, light malty, light fruity. Tame but pleasant. Flavour is light malty, light fruity, yeasty, astringent bitterness, some alcohol, green apples, bitter finish. Light bodied, way way way over-carbonated, and extremely dull and boring.

Authentic abbey ale, brewed for the well-known Averbode abbey since 2013. Moussy off-white, slowly disintegrating head over a misty golden blonde beer. Malty and vaguely fruity aroma with impressions of green apple, grains (spelt is actually used), coriander, fresh bread, white pepper, unripe peaches, pumpkin, flowers; taste a light apply fruitiness, some dried apricot, soft spicy tones and quite sharp carbonation, a subtle, wheaty sourishness (almost certainly the spelt sticking its head up), soft pils malt, a hint of caramel, towards the finish more bready and yeasty accompanied by a leafy hop bitterishness, quite long. A typical Huyghe beer if you ask me, not that far away from Delirium Tremens and the like. And like almost all other Huyghe beers, it failed to really convince me.

Blond, yellow colour, a lot of white foam. Lively carbonation. Light sweet taste with bitter hoppy finish. Good drinkable but nothing exceptional. Boring belgian tripel.
