Description
Averbode Abbey beer is a tribute to history: from the 14th to the early 20th century the abbey was already actively engaged in brewing. For the production of the ‘new’ abbey beer the abbey opted for Brouwerij Huyghe, which also has a rich history of its own.
However, there are also similarities. Respect for the environment and society play a central role in the brewery. Indeed, Brouwerij Huyghe is the only brewery in Belgium to produce the Mongoza-beer that has received the fair trade, gluten free and organic label. It also actively invests in a smaller footprint and social employment.

Bottle. Pale yellow with spongy white head, malt aroma, slightly metallic taste followed by the sweetness of a high alcohol brew, medium carbonation, longish finish. Happy to report that the metallic taste disappeared with the second mouthful.

Bottle at the Brouwcafe, Scheveningen. Poured a crystal clear straw colour with a big frothy white head. The aroma is light yeast. The flavour is medium bitter with a fresh crisp yeast, hop bitter, boozy alcohol palate. Light bodied with lively carbonation. A "poor" mans Duvel.

Very metallic-golden beer, medium carbonated, clear; all the yeast collected on the bottom. Initially big, but soon reduced white head. Bit spicy nose, with the unmistakable scorched sugar/alcohol/toasted malt Huyghe imprint; yeasty esters. Sharp, dry flavour with toasted-bitterish and sweet components; yeast-intoned. Hints at spices & herbs, impossible to say which, probably yeastesters, really. Sharp, dry, alcoholic. Heard that one somewhere before. Really? Oh, can’t be Trappist everybody that might want to.

330mL bottle at Delices et Caprices, pours a clear pale blonde with a medium white head. Aroma brings out dry crackery malts and lots of grains. Flavour brings out lots of yeast, sweet cereal malts, light dry hops, and champagne yeast. Very lively carbonation that brings out the complexity. Excellent tripel.

Deep yellow colour, with a huge white head disappearing very slowly. Smell is yeast, malt and some grassy hops, with some alcohol hints. Taste is less intense, with bitter finish. Ok but average.

Helder geel bier met schuim. Smaak is hoppig met fris citrus fruit. Blijft lang hangen. Uitstekend bier.

33 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from Delhaize. Gorgeous label, that much I have to admit. Pours a lighter, lightly hazy citrus with a sinking soapy white head. Smells very heavily of perfume, flower air refresher, synthetic apple, quite soapy, smells like a German hefe processes and managed to death at a factory. Tastes very synthetic as well, air refresher, perfume, synthetic apple, chemical, light fish guts, strange off-putting soapy synthetic taste, soggy white bread, white sugar sweet. Carbonation is a tad higher. This is Huyghe and this is a commercial brew so nothing here that surprises me, it isn’t as terrible as I feared but it tastes like a mix between a Belgian Strong Ale where mass appeal and cheap alcohol were the main goals mixed with a coriander-less rubbish Belgian white. I can drink it and it is okay but as a special, premium or craft beer of any kind this is an insult to anyone who understand even a little bit about beer in my opinion.
