Description

Bottle at le coq. Nostalgia! Lovely Dubbel. Rich fruitiness, ovaltine maltiness, dry, cocoa, quite initial hit of bitterness too though. Finish is caramel and smooth. Forgot how great this is.

Bottle at Quinns. Clear blond with big white head. Aroma sweet and lots of alcohol, quite yeasty and little bit sour. Taste is fruity, sweet and a bit of bread malt. Quite sweet, apple and a bit of peach. Quite full bodied. Lovely.

Bottle at Gainsbar. Dark red brown colour, small golden head. Aroma is sweet, caramel, bit beefy but mostly sweet. Taste nice sweet, sugar, beefy again, caramel. Very nice sweetness. not too full on, but decent body. Last beer of a long session so write up is all over the place.

Hops and citrus both in aroma and taste. Just a bit soapy. Nice, but a bit thin and not very complex, compared to other triple trappist beers. Re-rate: golden color, beautiful cramy head. An almost oily hopbitterness in the flavor. Pine. Some fruit shimmering through the wall of bitterness. Not very refined, but certainly a good beer. Has improved considerably over the years.

From tap at Café De Engel Oldenzaal. Beer of the Month in december 2002. Cloudy and very young with a buttery aroma. Flavor abundant with hops and licorice. Some butter in the flavor, that gets stronger while the beer is warming up. Lacks some complexity, but that will get better as the beer ages. Bottle, sold as Achel Extra Bruin. Malt, raisin, cake dough and caramel in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with raisin, porto and roasted malt. Hint of cinnamon. Velvety and not without complexity. Warming alcohol. Very well balanced, this powerful trappist ale.

Orange and dark brown color with a frothy head. Chunks of yeast. Tropical fruit aroma and flavor, especially pineapple. Some late hopbitterness. Licorice. Hints of sourness. Well made beer, that lacks the complexity of many other trappist ales.

Creamy, citric aroma. Sweet, citric creamy even a bit candy-like flavor. But after the initial sweetness a firm hopbitterness comes up, resulting in a creamy bitter aftertaste. Very good!
