Tap @ brewery. Dark brown color, cloudy. Only hints of bread and milk chocolate in the aroma. Thin to medium bodied. Watery mouthfeel. Soft roast flavor with raisinny notes. Slightly bready. Soft raisin and malt finish. Distant cellar flavor. Take your time drinking this beer, it is served way too cold.

Bottle. pale golden color. Pours a huge head. Floral citric aroma with some dried tropical fruit. malty sweet, floral flavor with dried citrus and tropical fruit. A firm hopbitterness. A worthy trappist.

Tap @ brewery. Blonde, hazy. Citrus and rancid butter in the aroma. Watery mouthfeel. Firm hop character with cellar notes. Grassy. Hints of rancid butter in the flavor. Something must have gone wrong.

Since the abbott of Westmalle, who gets the last word now with respect to Achel's beer range, decided to discontinue the 5% ABV 'refter' beers at Achel and replace them by 'his own' Westmalle Extra, Achel's taproom now only serves un-refermented tap versions of their two staple beers. This brown one showed a pale greyish white, cobweb-lacing, medium thick, mousy head (opening here and there) and cloudy burgundy-brown robe with vaguely purplish tinge. Aroma of caramel candy, brown bread dough, bubblegum, unripe banana, peach, cooked apples, tea. Very softly fruity, sweetish onset, pear, peach and banana notes with a light bubblegum effect, softish carb, fluffy but very smooth and slick body; caramelly and cleanly brown-bready maltiness, sweetish and supple with a thin nutty edge, leading towards a slightly earthy and powdery finish, a bit resinous as well, with a herbal, tea-like dash of late hop bitterness. Bubblegummy and caramelly aspects linger at the back. Like its blonde counterpart, also only available at the brewery's taproom, a highly drinkable, soft, smooth and 'light' version of the bottled Achel 8 Bruin and in that sense a somewhat different tasting beer, though it is basically the same thing.

The un-refermented tap version of the bottled Achel 8 Blond, available only from tap at the brewery; apparently the old 5% ABV tap beers ('refterbieren') have been abandoned on instruction from the abbott of Westmalle, who apparently decides over Achel's range. Snow white, medium thick, mousy, lightly lacing, stable head, equally misty deep orange-hued peach blonde robe. Rather weak aroma, impressions of peach, apricot, light banana, white bread pulp, red apple peel, hot potato mash, white pepper, dried camomile. Fruity onset but restrainedly so, notes of peach, pear and banana, medium carbonated, smooth and soft, slick body, white-bready and lightly caramelly malt sweetish but nowhere do residual sugars add too much sweetness; ends dryish thanks to a dash of floral and grassy hop bitterness, with some lingering fruitiness and slick soft maltiness. Like its brown equivalent, a simplified, softer, smoother and 'lighter' feeling version of the bottled Achel 8 Blond, very easily drinkable but lacking a bit in depth and body compared to its 'fully grown' self.

Bottle at Café Chic Oldschool, Hjørring. Pours clear golden with big white head. Aroma of peaches, cloves, pepper, flowers, alcohol, a tiny bit medicine. Taste sweet with some fruity sourness and spicy bitterness. Thin to medium bodied.

Aus der Flasche 2015-03 getrunken. Hinter dem Abbaye des Rocs Brune kommt diese recht schmächtig daher und eher dichter am Lupulus Brune dran. Doch es hat seine eigenen Qualitäten, insbesondere die Süffigkeit.
