Description
Robbert Orano started White Pony. He is a home brewer with Belgian roots. He has a great preference for craft beer and heavier Belgian beers. The White Pony brewery makes beer in an artisanal way, unpasteurized and unfiltered. And bottles the beer with respect for the old tradition. But all this is done with an innovative view of the brewing process.

A mild haze on this deep amber beer, small tan head. Fairly light palate that starts smooth but there is decent fine carbonation on the back end. Smooth malts, quite creamy and with a good helping of smooth caramel. Nice Armagnac richness, rounded and ripe fruity with a mild sherry vibe Finishes airy and with no discernable alcohol heat. An assured barrel showcase barleywine.

Mild to medium haze on this amber beer, small cream colour head. The malts are surprisingly light for such a hefty barleywine. A modest amount of creamy sweetness is dominated by a caramel Crunchie bar vibe, a little dark toffee. Traces of vanilla and wood. The cognac is very light and only modestly fruity. Light and semi dry finish. Mildly bitter toffee honey linger. Really not what I was expecting, but pleasing all the same.

A medium haze on this deep reddish amber beer, good pale tan head. Nose is very Marsala wine but nicely offset by a little vanilla and wood. Surprisingly airy palate, airy with a fine minerally crisp back end. Similarly surprisingly light malts, caramel and cream but not the thick heavy malt you might expect from a beer pushing 17%. The barrelling is the star of the show. Rich marsala wine mingles well with the malt base, sweetish and well stocked with sweet ripe fruits. Wood carries over from the nose and provides a light undertone of mild bitterness. Finishes airy and crisp. A surprise frankly! Been awhile since I've had a White Pony beer. Always liked there 'big is best' approach but there was many clunkers in their offerings. This one feels like an assured and well brewed barleywine that hides its big abv very well. Glad I bought the box set, looking forward to the ba bws in this series.

Fles gekregen van Inoven. Het is een donkerbruin bier met een medium schuimkraag. Het heeft een aroma van fruit en wat rook. De smaak is vol, fruitig, zacht zoet en wat caramel achtig met een warme afdronk.

Golden colour with stable thin head. I know tamarind and can pick it out here. I think there's a shortage of Brett here. The funk just isn't there. Residual malt sweetness. Then a white wine vinous element. Astringent aftertaste (probably the tamarind at work). Has potential.

10 April 2022. At 14de Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke & Pieter!

Clear golden, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of, weirdly, chlorine (like walking into a swimming pool), old sherry, plum, manog & pineapple juice, white sugar. Taste has sweet pineapple & mango, quite sugary and phenolic, some doughy malts. Grassy & floral hoppy finish, mostly ripe mango, some grape (the wood?), vanilla and warming triple sec-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Too crudely executed so falls short of expectations.

10 April 2022. At 14de Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke & Pieter!

Clear ochre, small, foamy, white head. Aroma of mango, orange peel, grapefruit, grass, shallot, spring onion. Taste has sweetish mango, orange & plum in a dry-biscuity malt body; ending grassy hoppy, green and straw-like, element of mango-flavoured water. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Not bad but rather bland and basically 'green'.

Fles thuis geprobeerd. Het is een diep donkerbruin bier met een beige schuim. Het heeft een aroma van gebrande mout en chocolade. De smaak is vol, chocolade en koffie.

Bottled. A dark, almost, black beer with next to no head. The aroma has notes of dried fruits, yeast, candy sugar, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of candy sugar, Belgian yeast, alcohol, and dried fruits, leading to a dry finish.

2020 Ed. Cream to dark beige head, slowly retreating over opaque, reddish dark brown... beer? Wood, chestnut, booze, spirit; some chocolate. Raisins on rum or other booze; black, if sweetened chocolate; syrup - in a decent way. Chocolatebar with raisins and alcohol; eggnog. Fiery alcoholheat. Aftertaste gives a strange - if not unpleasant - bitterness. Full bodied, viscous. The ultime punch. True to tell, it is much better than I feared. Still, you might not like the syrup. Thanks to Stef!
