12 oz bottle. I’d read the mixed reviews of this and had wanted to try it for quite a long time - finally found one. Poured an appealing ruby hue with a very large foaming khaki head. Aroma was nice-ish, with a cherry component to go with a very mild phenol. The flavor was a big disappointment though - an initial sweetness that hinted at classic Belgian ale, with a touch of cherries, followed by a brief tartness - but then it settled into an unusually bitter finish that seemed very out of place. Also the palate was rather thick and dull, heavy. No liveliness, and lacking carbonation despite the huge head. Really a poor mouthfeel, especially for a beer this big and flavorful.

Poured gold with big, white, frothy head. Sourish, spicy aroma. Malt, spice and hops on the tongue, with an almost winey finish. This seems much lower in alcohol than it is.

Bottle" Pours a cloudy amber/orange with lots of white head and good lacing. Aroma is mostly yeast, but also a bit of spices. Nice taste of malt, fruitiness, spice, and hints of yeast. Finished easy, crisp with just a twinge of alcohol on the end.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy amber golden with a creamy, off-white head leaving a broad curtain of laces. Aroma of yeast and burned caramel. Medium body with lightly sweet caramel and burned sugar - and then a distinct yeastiness. Rather tart without much bitterness. 191206

Very strong aroma right out of the bottle. Poured a deep burgandy with a medium off white head. The impressive aroma is fruity, with yeast, malts a little sugar sweetness and wine notes as well. A little alcohol in the aroma as well. Aroma becomes richer as the beer warms. Mouth is smooth and creamy. The flavor is just as delicious as the aroma. Caramel malts, dark fruits, yeast, brown sugar and some wine is all evident. Finishes with a nice alcohol bitterness. The flavor lingers on your tongue. This is an excellent beer, I wish I had tried it sooner.

Poures a beautiful yellow-orange witha large, fluffy off white head. Aroma is of malts and fruits, lightly citrus. Spice notes are also in the aroma. Flavor is malty and spicey. Citrus fruit notes are also in there. Pretty good Belgian.

Draught at BCTC ’06 and Belgian Beer Fest 10/27/06
Very generous head is moderately dense, especially for a draught beer. Very slow to recede, it’s an aged-ivory color with some drab brown-beige flecks. Dull mahogany-auburn body, with tan and beige hues swirling about. Medium to medium-low clarity, obviously unfiltered. Quite prominent lacing, very adhesive.
Fruity and piquant in the nose, it nonetheless also quickly displays some light caramel and raisiny special b-like notes. But the sweetness is reserved, allowing tart berry skins and light apples to titillate the senses. Late notes of lavendar and white pepper are apparent, but very moderately done. Brett is not explosive or brimming over-the-top here, but is certainly noticeable. With warming, some lactic suggestions are evident as well. Quite a bit going on, but I think it displays a good balance between some of the medium malts and the fruitiness/light acids on the end.
Very soft, almost oily-creamy texture shows moderate carbonation, with plenty of caramel notes. Some breadiness collects on the palate, but tart brett acids and lactic notes help disperse this. Some very minor chocolate-cherry suggestions, but dry and with some acetic qualities as well. Spices are held in check by the well-extracted malt, though it is well attenuated too. Very complex and I like how the bacteria is well-integrated with the spices and malts. It tastes of proper/extended lagering which helps add a cohesiveness of flavors. Apples, dry cherries, some plums and even a faint bit of pineapple all linger on the finish. No alcohol noted in aroma or flavor.

Label says "bright and soft as summer clouds over a Flander’s field!" One of the few beers I’ve seen with pouring directions on it. Nice informative label. I think I’m getting the unfiltered wheat, bottle conditioned, pour method down finally. Pours slightly cloudy in my steeler stein with a very pale light yellow hue. A layer of tan muck remains in the bottle. Virtually no bouqet but has the aroma of fresh spring water. Nice barely tart initial flavor. Palate is average carbonation. Finish is light, barely orangy (?) and pleasant with no lingering aftertase. Refreshing and enjoyable.
