BCTC ’06 (draught).
Auburn-tinged burgundy with some lighter bright red tints on the edges. Off-white head receded to cover fairly rapidly, but did leave a fair amount of webby lacing on the glass. Large bubbles rising to the surface frequently and a medium clarity.
Nose is sour, dry, lactic almost with a strong undercurrent of red raspberries that chip at the nose with a lightly juicy acidity. Very, very attenuated, grainy and displaying some oily/musty yeast notes. Only a passing thought of dark malts, not even acetic or caramel-like, so I’m not really sure why they called it a brown ale. But the raspberries are fresh and real and not overdone (though the malt is underdone).
The malt deficiency seems to come out most strongly in the flavor, where light herbal hop notes combine with dry, grainy malt residues to produce a tart (from the raspberries) and slightly mineralic (yeastiness) beer that could stand a rather large helping of body and malt influence. Not that I’m opposed to it being well-attenuated, but the raspberries are left to build up too much so and acidify and torment the palate on the finish, while the strong yeast character only exacerbates the problem. Sweetness, almost bittersweetness really, builds up over time. Didnt really see the brett thing here. Texture reminded me of that of a brewpub raspberry wheat (thin, nearly watery, bubbly).

BCTC - had this one after the Biere de Mars, and found it to be far superior - cloudy golden color, with abundant, sticky lace - extremely floral aroma, with a mild sweetness and fruity esters of strawberry and citrus - semi-dry on the palate, with just a mild brett character that is actually easy to miss - the fruits from the aroma make their presence known, along with a mild spiciness and lots of earthy notes - beautifully crafted.

BCTC - hazy golden/yellow with a hint of red - according to the chick running the taps, this was her first pour of it - man was I excited, but I must say I have to go against the grain a little bit and say I was a little disappointed by this - the aroma had a nice dry, herbal/wildflower character to it, but there was also an equal amount of soapiness, making this smell almost more like an expensive hand soap than a beer - the flavor almost made up for this shortcoming - a decent amount of brett and dryness, giving the beer a crisp, white wine-like character up front - followed quickly by a gentle, earthy helping of lavender and light fruits - hops arrive late, mingling with the drier qualities of the beer to create a sensation almost like the soapiness of the aroma - in short, starts and finishes a little weak, but is awfully strong in the middle.

Hazy maber ale with a creany white head. Floral spiced aroma, a field of flower, and light alcohol. Fresh menthol, herbs, a sweet malt, light lemony notes. Rich and smooth. Just plain lovely! On tap at BCTC 2006.

12 oz bottle. Clear amber color (if you ignore the sediment that will eventually settle). Lasting head with large bubbles. High carbonation. I let the beer’s temperature rise well above refrigeration levels. Full complex aroma: notes of sugar beets (or maybe that’s the cherries), fruity yeast, sugar cane maybe and some sweet malt. Sweet malty flavor, cherry fruitiness and a sweet vegetable flavor too. Some bitterness rises up midway in an attempt to be distinguished from the medley of flavors. I can’t discern all the flavors going on here. Nice drinkable beer.
