Hazy blonde colour with a soapy fast-dying white head. Aroma of hay, pepper, curacao and wheat. Light-bodied; Spicey pepper taste with definate noticeable coriander seed. Overall, not as impressed as expected, but hey, it is Ommegang! I sampled this 75 cL bottle on 15-May-2004 at the May RB Party in Toronto, Ontario.

Yellow, white head. Yeasty coriander nose. Spicy yeasty flavor with a short slightly tart finish. Not one of my favorite styles

2004 edition, bottled. A dark, creamy head that helps unleash a hypnotic Belgian candi sugar smell. Taste came up with a bit of Curaçao liquer and cocoa. All I get from the kriek blend is a light sourness. Very good and an intriguing blend.

2003 bottle consumed 9/2004. Pours a wonderful maroon-burgundy brown. Light orange and yellows swirl about. Good beige head that sticks to the sides long after it has disipated. Aroma has notes of concord grapes, plums, tobacco, tart cherries, ethanol, mossy/earthy yeast notes and of course, plenty of sweet caramel. Flavor starts out quite dry, moderately sour and really strikes me as more of a flemish sour ale. Though it dosent have nearly the bittersweet/sour flavors, it also dosent have the huge sweet malt profile of say, rochefort 10. A bit of a burnt cherry/ light acetone feel towards the finish, lots of strong alcohol flavors and seems like cherries soaked in extra strong brandy. Warming to room temp proved to allow more of the sweet malt I was looking for to arise, but it never got too dominant. Hints of raisins and chocolate round out the finish, with a dry, strange yeastiness at the end.

750mlBottle Pours a hazy dark redish brown with a very nice creamy light tan persistant head. Aroma is old oak, musty, slight cherry and alcohol. Flavors are of caramel, oak and the cherries are just lurking in the background. A bit dry, and the feel is a nice, lively sensation. The aftertaste is of old wood barrels. Very interesting.

Cloudy light yellow body, thin off-white head dissipating to a ring of carbonation. Strong tangy wheat aroma with orange peel for good measure. The yeast really permeates the flavor with fairly strong banana for a witbier as well as spice. The orange peel and lemon are more or less subdued, and the wheat leaves a bready tanginess on the palate after each sip. Yeah, it’s a good witbier.

2004 750mL bottle. Pours a bright orange/copper, fine bubbles, bottle conditioned (transluscent) and a large off-white head. Aroma has light peaches, apricots, hints of apple and plenty of dry belgian yeast. On the end is a lightly metallic, almost earthy note. Flavor is lightly fruity, chewy, full flavor with a pleasantly sweet, but not oversweet malt. Lightly bitter, earthy hops are detectable on the finish as well as plenty of yeast. I found this beer to be delicious, extremely drinkable and well-balanced. Maybe a bit too much bitterness and a touch too much dryness from the yeast/hops, but quite good.

Me in the store: "Hmm, a witbier; how painfully unoriginal.....I think I’ll buy a bottle." Me upon pouring: "Yup, that looks like a witbier alright." Me upon smelling: "Smells...average." Me upon tasting: "Yup...that’s a witbier. How absolutely uninspired.....I think I’ll buy another bottle."

I keep trying this beer and keep getting disappointed by it. Someday I will learn.+++ Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a golden color with a huge tan head. There is a sweet aroma of plum and cherry. The flavor is sour, bitter and tangy. There is a light flowery texture - a little hoppy even, but with decent malt balance. The finish is definitely dry. The beer is rather heavily carbonated which is a factor I do not care for.

Opaque yellow. Aroma of pale malts, marshmallows, a little bit of yeast. Fresh, slightly yeasty, slightly spicy palate. Soft body. Quick finish, with a hint of lemon. A little bit lighter than I prefer.
