Description
For us, good living means exploring – the opposite of “comfortable.” It’s not just about craft, but about questing, questioning, transforming “What If” into “Here’s How,” by way of an experiment so crazy, it just might work.
Exploration is the line from local beer maker to World-Class Brewer. It’s a pioneer impulse, and it sets the authentic, rural heartbeat of Southern Tier. It’s how we got here. And by the time others catch up, it’ll be why we’re already somewhere else.
From our wildly innovative founder, Phin DeMink, who’s still a daily inspiration, to the new generation of brewers, thinkers, and drinkers who share our pursuit of what’s next, we keep honing the creative edge of brewing discovery.
So this is an open invitation, to anyone who gives a damn about the difference between a well-crafted beer and a stunningly satisfying encounter with the new. Join us on the road less traveled.

draught at brewtopia - in order to sample this beer I had to - 1. wait for the seemingly ignored southern tier folks to get ice in their coolers - and - 2. tolertate the somewhat inhospitable southern tier reps - but it was so worth it - this is amazing stuff - one of the darkest tan heads I’ve ever seen, with an aroma of roasted nuts and coffee - hoppy for an IS? - sure, but so is Storm King, and that beer rules - besides, the hops really help to accent the roasty, woody, nutty characteristics of the beer - very full bodied - chocolate lingers in the finish forever - too bad this is a one-off.

On draught at Kaya in Pittsburgh. Pours a dark amber/orange color with a medium thin off-white head. Really nice lacing throughout the glass. Floral hops and citrus in the nose. Medium body with a nice bitter character. Flavors of hops, apricot, citrus and caramel abound. The finish is crisp with a nice hops bite. This is a nicely balanced IPA that doesn’t just dump a bunch of hops in and call it a day.

Deep black beer with a thick moka head. Malty chocolates and hops in the nose, very west coast, floral and resinous. Very rich, malty, with a good hoppy flavour, with a touch of roasted nuts. Good body.

Dull hazy golden beer with a slight malty nose. Nice cooky malt with a nice little hopyness with just a twinge of lemon. The malt is slightly caramelized,,,nice beer but everything is a bit too restrained...medium body

Hazy blonde with a fresh malt and pleasant german hop aroma. Very crips malt taste with nice saaz/german hops reminiscent of cerna hora or fresh Heritage lager but less floral. Nice body for a pilsner.

Hazy red copper beer ith a nice frothy white head and a wonderful resinous hops aroma with oranges. Wow! Incredibly rich malt with a crisp finish which marry well the wonderful hopped taste reminiscent of fresh fields. Oranges mix with grapefruits in the mouth without being overbearing. Sweet malt comes out as beer becomes warmer. Very well balanced body. Goes well with a nice beef curry!

This is very similar to their mild ale- with a lighter body (yellow-orange) and a slightly hoppier feel. The grassy hops give way to biscuity malt and a slightly bitter finish. Nice mouthfeel. Another good offering for the casual beer sipper but not something worth pursuing otherwise. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the Southern Tier tour-o'-brews!

Pours a clear amber/copper color with a thin off-white head. This is a light-bodied ale with earthy hops and toasty/nutty malts. Somewhat bitter. A decent session ale that shouldn't offend anyone. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the bottle.

Pours clear copper with a thin off-white head. This IPA is of the pine variety, with an ozoney, piney aroma leading to a bitter pine flavor with the requisite malt sweetness. Southern Tier brews a good beer, but they don't seem to push boundaries or experiment. This is a solid IPA that I would purchase regularly if I lived in New York, but it offers nothing unique or original that would make it worth pursuing from outside the region. Thanks Dan (jah noth) for the bottle!
Update 4/7/04: I'm really coming to enjoy this IPA. Just tried another bottle back-to-back with a Bells Two-Hearted. The diversity within the IPA style is substantial. I'm picking up some tobacco and bubblegum in this bottle that I missed last time. Almost more of an English-style IPA.

Pours deep red-brown, with a medium light tan head which quickly dissipates. Slight roast and milk chocolate in the nose give way to a nice creamy body of milk chocolate, toast, and a licorice touch, finishing somewhat chalky. On the creamy side for porters and this is welcomed. Thanks Dan (jah noth)!
