Description
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.

In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.

Amber beer with some nice malts, but rather thin, with not enough hops to make it interesting. bof!

Copper coloured body with a super-sized head full of huge bubbles. Aroma of strong nutmeg, a bit of canella, a large malt background and the always present caramel. Medium-bodied; One-dimensional taste of nutmeg overwhelming all maltiness. Caramel in the aftertaste, but not much else. Overall, a decent beer, not one you'd want all winter long though! I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Norm's in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 19-November-2003.

Pours a dark ruby-brown with a thin light tan head. Very thin and quick lacing. Aroma of coffee along with a bit of chocolate. Medium body as well. This beer is a little sharp on the front buy mellows a bit later on. There is a blend of sweet malt, caramel, coffee and some hops in the flavor, but none in abundance. The finish is mildly bitter. Overall this beer seems kind of lackluster.

Thanks to Darkover for the trade. This brew is a clear amber-orange color with a medium thin and quickly dissipating off-white head. Thin and quick lacing. Mild aroma of hops. Medium-bodied and rather smooth with a tempered hops and malt flavor. The finish is smooth and lightly malty. As an Amber ale this falls a little short but it is a fair session ale thanks to the smoothness.

Thanks to Darkover for the trade. Pours a hazy unfiltered-looking yellow color with a thin white head. Thin lacing. Aroma of citrus, banana and wheat. Crisp and rather light with a nice citrusy flavor, and it stays very effervescent on the tongue throughout. The finish is dry and a little fruity. This beer is not overly "wheaty", and that may be why I enjoyed it more than I usually enjoy beers of this style. I found this easy to drink.

Slightly hazy goldenrod colour with a very thin white head. Sweet aroma with plentiful malt and a bit of metal. Light-bodied; Sweet initial flavour fading fast, but leaving some malt and metallic nuances. Aftertaste actually bland, bitter and offensive. Overll, not a good summer beer, but not the absolute worst. I got this twelve ounce bottle at Norm's in Vienna, Virginia and sampled it on 10-October-2003.

Amber in colour with a decently thick dense off-white head. Strong aroma of caramel and pit fruits with a nice alcoholic sweetness-if smelt blindly, it smells like a barley wine! Medium-bodied; Watery taste showing a bit of the sweetness and malt background in the taste, but not much. A bit of the sweetness is tasted resulting in a caramely taste, but really its fairly bland. Aftertaste only showcases some of the malt, and a hint of spiceyness. Overall, a nice looking and smelling beer, but the taste actually is fairly mild and not showing too much. Perhaps a bit more enjoyable than their 'IPA', but its fairly close in not-great beer-standards :-). I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

Slightly hazy golden colour with a large-bubbled white head. Aroma of metal, wheat, a bit of citrus and a very tiny amount of cloves. Medium-bodied; Very carbonated mouthful, then coating the mouth with sweetness and spiceyness. Aftertaste shows some strong sweetness and then leaving the palate pretty dry. Overall, a bit better than I had expected with the low rankings...all-in-all not a bad American Wheat. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

Dark amber colour with ruby and orange highlights. Medium thick dense tan head...this is really what a Marzen should look like...nothing wrong at all. Strong malty aroma with a bit of spice and a bit of sweetness. Medium to Full-bodied; Fairly strong malty taste at first, fading to a bit of spiceyness and then completely dissapears from the palate. Aftertaste only shows a residual showing of the malt, and really no hops are detectable at any point throughout the beer. While this isn't the best Marzen I could imagine, it is one of the best i've had this year, which is crazy, as this is a larger produced beer. Regardless, if you want to see what a Marzen should be in the appearance and aroma, try this. I bought this twelve ounce bottle from Beers of the World in Rochester, New York.

Draught. Has a very cloudy beige yellow. Some bubble gum esters, little bit of citrus. Beer begins very plasticy with tons of bubble gum flavor. I am not tasting much wheat. Has a watery citrus mix towards the finish that is not very pleasant. The lemon they put in it did not help things. Hardly, if any, hops detectable. Beer seems artificially flavored. Problems with carbonation.
