Description
De Kromme Haring is all about surprising, well-made, delicious and drinkable beers.
Biologist and homebrewer Stephen Grigg travelled from America via the UK to settle in the Netherlands as (homebrewery) De Kromme Haring. After meeting beer-afficionado Gijs van Wiechen, who invited him to brew the anniversary beer for infamous bar-dive Kafe Belgie, the two decided to "go pro" in 2014.
After the first tentative, educational and sometimes frustrating steps in contractbrewing they quickly decided that they needed their own system and place to pursue their aproach to brewing. This cunning plan came to fruition when they opened their very own brewpub in september 2016, with the brewery installed in december 2016.
With over 20 years of brewing experience, we have cultivated a deep love for English malts and American hops. However, we love yeast even more and believe that the quality of fermentation is at the core of all well-made beer. Knowing how to work with many different kinds of yeast, both "clean" and "wild", is what sets us apart.
Our brewery and yeast lab allows us to experiment with lesser known and used yeast strains in our brewery. Part of our brewery is even dedicated to stainless steel fermenting with wild yeasts like Brettanomyces and/or blended cultures, creating surprising and delicious flavours.

Sampled from tap at Brouwersfestival Utrecht 2016. Hazy, golden amber with a medium large, dense, white head. Sourish, funky and slightly fruity aroma of lemon, straw and oak. Sourish-fruity, funky taste of lemon, straw and oak, followed by a short, slightly bitter, tart finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very nice!

Sampled @ UBF 2016. Hazy murky opaque milky pale yellow color, average sized white head. Aroma annoys me: I don’t like the mix of strawberries, brett and sweetness. Barnyard in there too. Not my thing. Decent body and carbonation. Ok but as I said not my thing.

On tap @ Brewda 2015. Cloudy, pale/yellow color. Off white head, not much. Aroma’s: resin, citrus, a bit yeast. Retronasal it’s much milder (more English), aromahops. Flavor is moderate bitter, with a light sweetness and a light sour note. Light bodied, not thin. Finishes rather dry and bitter. Nice crossbreed.

Draft @ Brett Fest 2015. Strange smell of herbs, brett and grain. Taste is weird, with hop, brett and lots of grassy herbs and nettle. Unpleasent dry finish. Yech.

Draught at Arendsnest at Carnivale Brettanomyces. Smoked porter from a new Dutch craft brewer, with creamy, light beige, lacing, stable head and very dark, hazy burgundy colour, as good as black. Aroma of smoked herring, bacon, elderberries, leather, roasted pinenuts, caramel, bitter chocolate. Taste starts with restrained banana, berry and raisin sweetness, orange accent, some almost ’blood-like’ iron, background sourishness and thick malty body, very nutty, light bitter chocolate accent, strong but still gentle smokiness in the end leading to a dry finish of smokiness, hint of roastedness and some peppery hops. Very tasty, recommended if you’re into smoke beers.
