Description
De Kromme Haring is all about surprising, well-made, delicious and drinkable beers.
Biologist and homebrewer Stephen Grigg travelled from America via the UK to settle in the Netherlands as (homebrewery) De Kromme Haring. After meeting beer-afficionado Gijs van Wiechen, who invited him to brew the anniversary beer for infamous bar-dive Kafe Belgie, the two decided to "go pro" in 2014.
After the first tentative, educational and sometimes frustrating steps in contractbrewing they quickly decided that they needed their own system and place to pursue their aproach to brewing. This cunning plan came to fruition when they opened their very own brewpub in september 2016, with the brewery installed in december 2016.
With over 20 years of brewing experience, we have cultivated a deep love for English malts and American hops. However, we love yeast even more and believe that the quality of fermentation is at the core of all well-made beer. Knowing how to work with many different kinds of yeast, both "clean" and "wild", is what sets us apart.
Our brewery and yeast lab allows us to experiment with lesser known and used yeast strains in our brewery. Part of our brewery is even dedicated to stainless steel fermenting with wild yeasts like Brettanomyces and/or blended cultures, creating surprising and delicious flavours.

Bottle from Lekkerbier, Sint Nicolaasga. Aroma is smoked grain, bready wheat, sweat, funk, old socks, cheese, tart cranberries. Nicely tart, moderate sour. Deep funky cheesy finish. Body is medium. Complex and wild indeed.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is estery yeast, malt, ripe fruits, notes of stone fruits, marmalade, apricot. On the sweet side for a Saison. Body is medium. Decent, but a bit disappointing coming from Kromme Haring, I like my Saison way more dry.

330ml. Opaque colour, steady beige head. Aroma is toasted with licorice and fruity hops. Medium-bodied. Roasted, bitter hops, licorice, dark chocolate and some fruityness. Bitter CDA, more on roasted/bitter side than one with fruityness.

330ml can. Jet black colour with average to huge, thick, dense, creamy, moderately to mostly lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Chocolately and slightly roasty, dark malty as well as herbal-spicy aroma, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, notes of ginger, allspice, aniseed, a touch of liquorice, herbs. Taste is slightly bitter, roasty and slightly chocolately, minimally smoky, dark malty with subtle residual sweetness, additionally slightly spicy and minimally herbal, notes of dark chocolate, some coffee, hints of allspice, ginger, aniseed, a minimally herbal touch, smoky interludes, almost ashy overtones in the last third.
Creamy-oily texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, fine, dense, creamy carbonation.
Well crafted, good mouthfeel, not too flattering flavours, well controlled sweetness - pretty decent.

Can from BiervanEijk, Frederiksoord. Aroma is citrussy hop with orange, mandarin, tropical notes, melon, touch of grapefruit and pineapple. Flavour is moderate to medium bitter, light (bit weak) body. Bit too light-weight for it's own good but aroma and taste check out.
