After many years of brewing and the many awards that have adorned Haymarket Beer, Peter L. Crowley understands a thing or two of what makes a great beer. We named our company – Haymarket Beer Company – in honor of those ideas and the people who took pride in them and worked hard to protect them. (That’s a great story, by the way, and you should read more about it.)
We’ve built Haymarket out of everyday people – office workers and school teachers, stonemasons and police officers, plumbers and postal workers – with one promise: making great beer for great beer drinkers. It means that even as we grow, that we never lose sight of what got us where we are today – each other.
Forgive us for getting mushy – this kind of stuff doesn’t come out well through a computer screen. Come and see us the next time you’re in town. We’ll show you what we mean.

Enjoyed on tap at Haymarket in Chicago, IL with a friend who revealed pics of him and Dave Grohl hanging out backstage at a Foo Fighters show that I was supposed to go to with him, but I had to sell my ticket a week before the show (backstage passes were never in the plan before I made my decision...). I love this guy (my friend) but my jealously at the time of writing this review was just too much to bear. At any rate, this beer was a great thing to have at the time of finding this information out. It’s aroma was huge in bourbon & whiskey notes, with notes of cinnamon and vanilla. Appearance a dark amber with almost no head. Taste definitely kicks you with alcohol, very strong, but still maintains a bit of smoothness, nice body with a great complexity to it. Pretty good stuff and greatly enjoyed, happy to have had it in a 4 oz glass as a 12 oz would put me on the floor.

Unfortunately I didn’t take any notes for this one as I was imbibing with a good friend on a night off from work, but from what I remember, this was a righteous Oktoberfest brew, on par with the best I’ve had. Appearance a dark copper amber with a thin white head. Aroma of malts. Taste equal parts malty and crisp, just went down very nicely over the course of the evening. Great stuff, I remember drinking Great Lakes’ Oktoberfest brew a couple of years ago, thinking it was the best I had up until that point, and now that title can be shared with Haymarket. Kudos to this nice local Chicago brewpub!

Enjoyed on tap with some good friends while enjoying dinner at Haymarket Pub in Chicago, IL. Appearance a darker caramel amber with a thin white head. Aroma definite hop presence, more of the wet citrus/dry hopped variety. Taste is equally smooth and bitter, nice citrus and caramel notes. Definite fruit presence, adds a sweetness to the brew, and out just goes down nicely. Best one so far for sure. In a way this tasted very similar to Bells’ Two Hearted Ale, which is definitely a good (if not great) thing. Really was a fantastic IPA.

Enjoyed on tap prior to eating a meal with some good friends at the Haymarket Pub in Chicago, IL. Appearance partially cloudy gold with thin white rim. Aroma of belgian yeast, clove, definite hop presence, a bit of pepper, pretty good. Taste is decent, definitely unique. Peppery with hop bitterness, i like it but it seems like something is off with it. I don’t know what rye tastes like but I’m sure that’s what feels off about this. Happy to have tried but wouldn’t try again, still a good brew though, just not my cup of tea.
