[Cask at GBBF] Brown colour. Roasty and nutty, yeasty and citric. Medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel. More dishwater & lemon than bitterness in the finish.

Cask (handpump) at the Waterman’s Arms, Eton SL4. Very slightly hazy, deep amber colour. Flavour is fruity and nutty, with a hint of easte and a touch of light bitterness. Caramel malt and toffee dominate the aroma.

Bottled. (As Wobble in a Bottle) Brownish orange and hazy, with a beige head. Looks really deliciuos. Hops, a light maltiness, and some caramel in the aroma. Quite volatile. The flavor has a good dash of alcohol, with caramel sweetness and some hoppiness. Fullbodied beer, and a finish with alcohol and hops. (060604)

Bottled. A copper-colored beer with a small beige head and lots of floaties. It has an aroma starting off with alcohol and dried fruits, with sweetness, malt, hops and caramel coming later. The flavor is sweet and malty, with lots of hops and some alcohol. Full body and a dry, slightly astringent finish with some roastiness. A nice beer with a nice, long bitterness. (060513)

500ml bottle from Cask & Cask, Tonbridge. So this beer will put me as king of this brewery. I have fallen in love with this brewery’s stronger beers. I love them. Very dark brown and ruby with thin beige head. Chocolate malt is wonderful, somewhat milky with dry malt and more milkiness on end. Alcohol keeps it interesting. It’s like drinking 70% dark chocolate with a glass of full fat milk. Nice but not wonderful. 3.8/5.0 Re-rate Cask gravity at Red Lion, Snargate Summer BF 08. Lovely. Dates, choc, molasses, treacle, but not syrupy, still dryish. Bit of spice, nutmeg. Smooth, not harsh. A kind of treacle sponge cake with nutmeg. Fantastic. I love this.

Cask at the Myrtle Grove, Bingley, West Yorks, 19-05-06. Alcohol very prominent in the aroma, and also gets you straight away on first taste, dark amber in colour and it looked a decent pint (yes I braved a pint at 9%) there really wasn’t an awful lot wrong with this if you coulg get over the alcohol but I just got totally fed up with just tasting that. I have never been that struck on Hogs Back and can’t recall one of theirs that I like.

Cask handpull at Folkestone Wetherspoons. Reddy/chestnut beer with bubbly disappearing head. Sweet hop and candy sugar sweet aroma. Thick in mouth, good hit of alcohol which is warming but not unpleasant. Grapefruit and raisin fruit flavours. Really rather good. Like the other Hog’s Back barley wines/strong beers, this is excellent. Just the right mix of intense hop and alcoholic strength. I then had it the next day and the fruit had developed into strawberry and grapefruit and this was a truly stunning drink. I had 3 halves in an hour and was thoroughly plastered.

Cask handpull at Magpie & Crown at Brentford. Dark ruby with thin beige head. Does what it says on the tin. It’s mild, drinkable, some juicy dark malts, toffee, but the flavours are subdued. Old fashioned mild. You could drink pints of this and not notice. More toffee and coffee on end with minimum dry powder. Depends what you want. Fine, but not exciting.
