500ml bottle from Waitrose. A clear reddish gold colour with a fruity aroma; nutty, malty and sweet with a vegetable like finish. Smooth and refreshing.

(Bottle 27,5 cl) Comes as "Hogs Back Wobble in a Bottle". Pours a hazy, dark amber with an off-white head. Fruity, sweetish nose. Rather full-bodied - a bit flat - very pleasant fruity accents - peach? Hoppy finish. Quite pleasant. 120207

Well kept pint served at the right temperature from the hand pumps at Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell. Dark amber coloured body under a thin white layer that left slight lacing on the glass. Dark, burnt malts in aroma. Mixture of malts in flavour with the weight on the caramel side. Rounded, bitter finish (31.01.2007).

Full pint at Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell. Dark amber body with a filmy layer. Lightly malted aroma. The taste has got hints of citric hops and dark malts. Light bitter ending. Smooth and dry. Very traditional English bitter (31.01.2007).

Succesfull bottle-conditioned version of a B.C."H."; slightly cloudy orange-amber beer, with a verdigris shine. Quite medicinal nose, with some phenolic streaks and hop hiding behind. Faint fruity, but the phenols keep overwhelming this. Bitterish overlying taste on a malty underbuild. The bitterness is difficult to analyse; part hops, no doubt, part coffee-like - though no coffee would be acceptable this way - and part again phenolic. Maybe some higher alcohols. Also some berry-like flavours - very wild berries then. Sharp, aggressive MF, rather mild alcoholic, but thinnish body. Sample well inside its BBD frame, but I wonder how it was kept. I cannot imagine this flavour profile being deliberate.

Cask Medium yellowish and very persistent head over red-foxy beer. Mixture of old wine with nuts, sour cherris, slightly acidic portwine. Drier, nearly bitter taste, flavour of bitter chocolater. Gets only vinous in the ende even a bit like fortified wine, strawberry flavoured. Lots of restsugars giving a sticky, near syrupy texture, especially after swallowing. It’s only in the aftertaste taht I get some dry hopoil, on fleeting whiffs. Nice strong ale in the better (sweet) UK tradition.

Cask (handpump) @ Anglesea Arms, SW7, London. Amber / copper color with a small white head. Aroma is malty, caramel, yeasty (flower, fruity) and hoppy. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration.

Cask (handpump) @ The Mitre, W2 London. Amber / red color with a small white head. Aroma is malty, frutty (rips ?). Flavor is moderate sweet with a average duration and some notes of bittersnes in the finish.

Cask condition handpull at Fox & Hounds, Romney Street, Kent. Ruby beer, with tan head. Choccy malt. Quite smooth, bit of port wine. Nice enough, supping strong mild. Not huge hop. Bit of dark syrup

VERY aged sample - actually 15-16 yrs, making it even more interesting... Old Armenian brandy colour, no head. Christmas cake nose with lots of alcohol, sweet smelling and a "sourish" Christmas pudding sauce (butter& vanilla). Sweet, cakey taste, a lot of alcohol, higher alcohols, a touch of yoghurt and sultana’s. Slick, alcoholwarming with even fully liqueurish MF. Superbly age beer - which means it must have been good to start with already. Big thanks to Steve Hannigan for a taste of this!
