Description
The history of the brewery dates back to 1679. At the end of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Liefmans settled in Oudenaarde and gave the brewery its name. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling maturation tanks with black cherries, on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. One individual who played a key part in this was Rosa Merckx. She was closely involved in the brewery’s operations over several decades. Thanks to her encouragement, the cherry beer evolved into a real success story.

Bottle: Hazy, cloudy, amber coloured, thin, quickly diminishing off-white head; a tinge of toasted malt in the aroma; vinous, fruity too, some wood in the background; dry, only a bit sweetish, sourish, fruity flavour; short, fruity, a bit lingering finish. Not bad, not overwhelming, kind of a diluted Goudenband......................

Dark ruby pour with large chunks of sediment - complex aroma of cherry, nutmeg (and other "christmas-like" spices), raspberry, brown sugar - very sour up front, and in the finish, rounding out or "book-ending" the beer - in between is where the fun stuff happens - cherry and berries, followed by a doughy, spicy, christmas cookie-like flavor, a dash of cinnamon - there is some metallic/oxidized flavor in there somewhere, but that’s probably due to its age - a really neat beer.

2000 bottle - dark amber with significant floaties - only a mild sourness in the nose, along with plum, raisin, cherry and vinous notes - some apparent oxidation in the aroma - a mild sourness in the flavor - red wine flavors, along with a mild honey sweetness - a tiny bit of brett-like funk/cheesiness, but the sweetness is actually a bit more prevalent - pretty good, but I was expecting more sourness - probably a good intro to the style for the uninitiated.

Bottle: Poured a dirty brown color ale with a huge off-white foamy head with pretty good retention. Aroma of sugar and tart cherries is quiet interesting. Taste is very refreshing with a well balance sourness covered by some sugar and some oak. Definitely not as great as Rodenbach Grand Cru but very interesting nonetheless and I would love to have access to this as a session ale for those hot summer days.

Bottled. Muddy cherry red. Aroma of cloves and cinnamon with plenty of cherries. Sweet and intensely fruity, served cold it reveals juicy fresh citricity, while warm the focus shifts to the spices and the alcohol. This is a really good beer, but surprisingly it falls slighty short in a comparison with the more intense copy Quelque Chose.

Barnyard and sour wine aroma, which is very pleasant but not as powerful as it might be. Very dark brown. Considerable carbonation but the head is short lived. Several flavors. Balsamic vinegar, sweet fruit. Sour compared to many beers, but not very sour in its own right.

(bottle) Hazy and murky red colour with a very small off-white layer. Sugary, cherry-fruity and very spicy aroma with alcohol. Sweet flavour, non-artificial cherry-fruity taste with cloves, cinnamon and gingerbread and a warming alcoholic note in the lasting and slightly tart finish. Probably better than most Glühweins.

Quite a pretty looking beer, all purple and whatnot. Tons of raspberries in the aroma and flavor. Too much actually. The tasty base flemish sour is drowned out in a mass of raspberry juice
