Description

Bottle from BiervanEijk, Frederiksoord. Aroma is fairly hoppy for a Tripel with soft peppery yeast, grassy noble hop, pale malt, spicy yeast. Flavour is moderate bittersweet with a little dryness in the finish as well. Body is medium. I dig me a hop-forward Tripel, some lovely grassy, floral-ish tones here.

Towering, ultra-dense, foxy-amber head over hazy well-carbonated, red-orange to again foxy-coloured beer; end of bottle solid deposit. Rainwater, wet wood, shrubbery, bit rubbery too, plywood. Coffee-ish, some faraway sweetness (probably not unrelated to the alcohol). Dark(er) malts, again plywood and British 'chocolate'. Quite well-bodied, absolutely enough carbonation; gristslick, oily to chewy. It's original, I must admit. But I'm still not going ethousiastic about it. Txs to Stef!

One of old Jef Van den Steen’s more recent creations, a celebrational quad for the twentieth anniversary of the brewery, hopped with Groene Belle: a very traditional Belgian hop variety once locally popular, then gone extinct (at least commercially) and recently rediscovered by the most alert of Belgian (and foreign) craft brewers. From a 75 cl bottle bought at Geers. Thick and rocky, clearly hops-enhanced, pale greyish beige, plaster-like lacing, stable head on a misty ruddy-bronze robe with amberish glow and fine strings of sparkling throughout. Aroma of brown bread, dry cake bottom, autumn leaves, clove, moist white pepper, beech nuts, pear, nutmeg, dried chestnut, coriander seed, dried out orange peel, stewed plum, medlar, green garden weeds (dandelion), bergamot, even vague lavender, dust. Fruity-estery onset, sweetish yet restrainedly so with thin sourish edge, elderberry, pear, plum and medlar impressions, lively carb but fine-bubbled enough not to damage the flavours. Rounded, smooth, bit fluffy mouthfeel, very brown-bready malt core, old cake and toast notes – the latter adding an initially soft bitter note which then is taken over by the Groene Belle hops, which provide a long, earthy, resinous and herbal bitterness – turning a tad weedy in the end even, but also with a brighter, grapefruity and even lavender-like side to it, which for a brief moment even glimpses of orange juice. Classic clove- and nutmeg-like phenols join in, as does coriander powder; the whole is then tied together by ‘jenever’-like alcohol which warms without burning away the flavours. Yeasty, bit earthy quad, balanced and distinct and in the end very tasty if you are into strong dark Belgians: in fact, contrary to my expectations, I find the Groene Belle quite colourful here, working remarkably well with the other flavours and adding a nice sense of terroir, as after all this brewery is located in the region where this all but forgotten hop variety once flourished. This Q20 exceeds my expectations and ends up among the very best of Glazen Toren brews I had to date.

Bottle. Color: Clear amber, yellowish beige head. Aroma: Malty, caramel and dark malt. Taste: Dense and smooth mouthfeel. Malty. Notes of caramel, candy sugar and hints of chocolate and raisins. Light hints of nuts. Over moderate sweet. Light hopbitterness, going to moderate at the finish, with floral and light citrus hints. Nothing very special, but a very well brewed beer, noticeably made with craftmanship. Nice.

Taster at Das Stahl. Pours dark brown, with a big, frothy, khaki head. The aroma is sour cherries, leather, cocoa powder, and lime. Sweet and sugary, and quite sour. The bartender assured me that it was supposed to be sour, and it was surprisingly acceptable, but clearly not intended. Medium body, sticky, and acidic. Odd, but not bad.
