Description
Spearheading the barrel-ageing movement from Scotland, The Original bourbon barrel-aged beer is the one that started Innis & Gunn when Master Brewer Dougal Gunn Sharp founded the brewery in 2003.

Innis & Gunn was contract brewed in Glasgow at Tennent's Wellpark Brewery since 2014. On 15 November 2018 Tennent's announced the brewing contract will be terminated with effect from September 2020. Innis & Gunn responded the following day by saying they plan on opening their own brewery.

The Innis & Gunn Brewery in Perth is our home for innovation and barrel-ageing. With plans to build a new large scale brewery in our hometown of Edinburgh, it will be the first new large brewery to be built in the capital in 150 years.

Bottle at Bishop’s Arms, Malmö
Beautiful dark amber color. Nice mix of caramel, vanilla and rum aroma. Medium body, some sweet malt flavor, and a quite evident Bourbon-Rum touch. Very pleasant.

(33 cl bottle, from Systembolaget. Thanks for sharing larsniclas!)I tried hard finding this beer at Systembolaget, starting the working day after they released it, but no luck. Lucky indeed though that larsniclas was generous enough to share one of his bottles.Limited to 84,000 bottles, sold only to UK and Sweden.First thoughts of the smell is oak aged mezcal! Agave juice and oak scent, only! The box speaks of subtly hints of oak, my feeling was getting a one hundred years old oak tree showed up each nostril, damn! They should warn you before sniffing, like the chemistry classed when sniffing acids... Lots of alcohol as well, when searching beyond the oak. Clear brown color, tan head. Sweet, buttery, oak and vanilla with alcohol taste. Medium to spritzy mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Fun experiment, but a strange one. Perhaps it might mellow with aging? I won’t find out since I couldn’t get any bottles for myself.

12 oz bottle...copper with off-white soapy head....aroma---sweet malts and sweet whiskey...smells that make you go hmmmm....creamy body, yet light...flavor--the essence of a whiskey shot left on the palate then chased by a lager or stronger ale...makes me want whiskey (irish)...a slight peatiness to the finish...price is a tad high for quality

12 oz bottle-pours an off white head and copper color. Aroma is citrus-lime, which gives way to whisky, woody. Taste is whiskey/malt, woody, some vanilla. Smooth. Occasional. OK carbonation. Thanks jwc215 for sharing.

Bottle, shared by papsoe. Clear, copper beer with a beige head. Malty, slightly peaty nose with some alcohol and sugary sweetness. Malty, slightly sugary flavor with some peat and alcohol, and a vague sourness as well. Full body. I like it. It feels a bit ordinary despite it’s peatyness, and I am uncertain if it deserves my rating, but I guess it does. (071005)

Bottle. Clear, copper pour, with an off-white head. Rich, malty nose, slightly peaty, with some fruityness as well. The flavor is sweet, with maltyness, some fruit notes, and not much bitterness. Neither in the initial flavor, nor in the finish. Full body. A nice, malty and peaty beer. I normally prefer more hoppy beer, but this one is nice, but maybe a bit on the sweet side. Repeatable indeed. (071005)

Now labelled as "Bourbon Barrel Aged". Copper colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have a certain sweet spiciness with elements of nutmeg and cinnamon.

2007 bottle:
Amber colour. Medium sized, dense head. Aroma has a lot of tar and peat, smells a lot like Islay whisky (Laprohaig?). Dry, peaty, ashy flavour that doesn’t mix well with the sweet background. An interesting experiment, but unfortunately the result didn’t work out too well.

(Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of Sammy. Pours a clear, warm, dark amber golden with a somewhat rough, off-white head. Sweetish aroma of wood and whisky. Medium body with a little caramel and lightly burned whisky notes. There’s a vague tartness underneath all of this. 051007

(Bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of yngwie. Clear, warm, amber golden with a dense, handsome, off-white head leaving some lacework. Aroma of wood and vanilla. Medium body, fairly sweet and caramellish with distinct whisky notes. Almost no bitterness. Perhaps a little on the sweet side. 051007
