Description
Local Option Bierwerker is the brewing division of The Local Option, a pub in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Owner Tony Russomanno has established himself in the craft beer community through years of experience, and today he partners with six different breweries to create all of Local Option's diverse and innovative beers. Local Option Bierweker believes partnering with different breweries gives them maximum flexibility, allowing them to brew as large or as limited a batch as needed. They’ve taken up recipes long forgotten by the mainstream, such as the Kentucky Common, and perfected well-established favorites, like their steam beer Dampf Loc. Local Option Bierwerker offers a brash, in-your-face approach to craft beer; they brew with bravado and aren’t afraid of a little well-placed irreverence while still respecting the long-standing traditions that provide the foundation for their heavy metal brews.

Bottle @ home via the good ole rotbox, picked up at Liquor Max Loveland. Pours a hazy reddish orange appearance with a cream colored head. Burnt roasty coffee, a touch smoky, very earthy aroma. A bit tangy, lightly fruity, quite roasty coffee, caramel, chewy woody flavor. Kind of strange and not really up my alley.

Bottle from Berkeley Bowl - West in Berkeley, CA. Pours hazy amber with a slight beige head. Aroma is rather fruity - not exactly citrus, but sort of. Near full bodied. Flavor is spice, somewhat darkish fruit (like ripe light stone fruit?). There’s something like mixed barley and wheat. It’s a pretty flavorful ale. Especially considering it’s a wheat. Pretty drinkable.

A hazed reddish amber ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, superb wheaty and herbaceous malt with catty hops, coriander, lemon, very nice. In mouth, a smooth fruity malt with light esters, coriander, resinous hops, very nice. Bottle from whole foods, Columbus Circle for 7.99 $.

The Sampler, Brooklyn 50cl ($8): Pours brownish amber with an off-white head. Aroma is grassy German hops, caramel malts. Nice slightly hoppy taste with a very nice malt backbone. It tastes pretty German to me. Quite nice.

500 ml bottle purchased at Keg Liquors in Clarksville, Indiana. The pour is lightly hazed orange copper with a one inch off white head that falls quickly with a loose foam. The aroma is softly sweet fruit caramel malt, some nice herbal grass and hay present as well. The taste is the sweet malty cereal grain, on top of the herbal grass, finishes clean and dry. Bit of warming alcohol present as the beer warmed. The palate is medium bodied, active carbonation and the grass dry finish. Interesting herbal aftertaste. Nice take on the style.
