Description
Local Option Bierwerker is the brewing division of The Local Option, a pub in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Owner Tony Russomanno has established himself in the craft beer community through years of experience, and today he partners with six different breweries to create all of Local Option's diverse and innovative beers. Local Option Bierweker believes partnering with different breweries gives them maximum flexibility, allowing them to brew as large or as limited a batch as needed. They’ve taken up recipes long forgotten by the mainstream, such as the Kentucky Common, and perfected well-established favorites, like their steam beer Dampf Loc. Local Option Bierwerker offers a brash, in-your-face approach to craft beer; they brew with bravado and aren’t afraid of a little well-placed irreverence while still respecting the long-standing traditions that provide the foundation for their heavy metal brews.

Tap at brewery. Fresh roasted coffee, and a little bit of smoky oak. Aroma reminds me of walking into a coffee serving bookstore. Hazy amber with a small white head. Sweet caramel malt, earthy smooth coffee - like a smooth Sumatran coffee, and light oak flavor. Medium body and carbonation.

Super hazy deep apricot coloured body with a copper and amber glow and a thin, fast-dying off-white head. Aroma of metal, alcohol, apricots, fruit, pungent hops and a bit of medicine. Medium-bodied; Assertive nutty flavour at first with a medicinal feel and a malty, yet almost caramel and toffee sweetness going right through. Aftertaste is nice and robust with some lighter alpha acid hops, some mild yeast notes and a bit of good malt as well. Overall, an interesting beer and definitely worth trying to find - for the style and for the legend of a bar it represents in Chicago. I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from Binny’s in Chicago (Lincoln Park), Illinois on 04-December-2011 for US$6.66 (love it) sampled at home in Washington on 10-September-2012.

Sample at Local Option. Pours a clear golden color with a medium fizzy white head that evaporates steadily. Short stringy lacing. Aroma of herbal hops and malt. Light body with flavors of mildly bitter hops, toffee and fruit. The finish is lightly hoppy with an herbal aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sampler, guest tap @ the GI Clyborn location. Color is dark brown. Moldy cobwebby aroma with faint cherry pit and some roast. It is akin to a Flanders but even tamer and the roast is novel (light roast). Flavor has more sour cherry flavor covered in roast. Interesting and very quaffable. Would love to buy this in a 10 dollar sixer. But roast and sour a bit weird.

Tap at brewery. Light fruity tart malt aroma. Dark brown with a small off white head. Light tart cherry flavor, reminds me of a very mild, smooth fruity balsamic vinegar. Medium body. Nice.
