Description
Local Option Bierwerker is the brewing division of The Local Option, a pub in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Owner Tony Russomanno has established himself in the craft beer community through years of experience, and today he partners with six different breweries to create all of Local Option's diverse and innovative beers. Local Option Bierweker believes partnering with different breweries gives them maximum flexibility, allowing them to brew as large or as limited a batch as needed. They’ve taken up recipes long forgotten by the mainstream, such as the Kentucky Common, and perfected well-established favorites, like their steam beer Dampf Loc. Local Option Bierwerker offers a brash, in-your-face approach to craft beer; they brew with bravado and aren’t afraid of a little well-placed irreverence while still respecting the long-standing traditions that provide the foundation for their heavy metal brews.

Brewvival Trip Beer 112. Draft at Brewvival. Cool to see a new (to me) midwest brewer there. It’s a shame I didn’t make it to their table before a they had one beer left. Pours a clear amber color with a large frothy off-white head. Good head retention. Aroma of herbal hops and toasted malts. The taste is toasted malts, caramel, herbal hops. Medium bodied.

Draft at AtG Louisville. Lemon and light wheat malt aroma. Cloudy yellow with small head. Lactic, lightly salty lemon and creamy wheat malt flavor. Excellent - not an easy style to find. This is the best I’ve had the pleasure to try. Definitely one to seek out.

Shaker on draft at the Local Option. Dark, muddy, amber-brown color, no clarity. The aspect that stood out to me was definitely damp malts. It felt a bit like wet bread with a hint of American hops hiding in there. Light drink, medium to light carbonation. Very malt driven and in a novel way. Very subued and gentle on the cheeks. I liked it but would not be my "go-to" beer.

Tap at Local Option. The beer comes to me with a hazy, dim, dull yellow color and a small head. Aroma is strong on coriander and light lactic touches. Favor is great with coriander and good lactic flavor that ends in some light tart touches. I would like it to be just a little more sharp and crisp but otherwise great. Salt perception is very variable but I (high tolerance) and my lady (low tolerance) thought the salt character was mild. These guys make beer for me, everything fits my tastes.

Draft. Notes of citrus, sweet bread and floral hops. Pretty darn good beer. Wish it was in bottles...or more available around me.

On tap. Pours dark brown with a vague reddish hue and a small beige head. Very sweet vanillaish Bourbon in the nose. Medium body, starts slightly sweet and syrupy but quickly turns distinctly tart - as in tart berries. Some yeast and biscuit notes. Quite different - an acquired taste I believe. 121212

Draft. A dark nut-brown beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, bourbon, wood, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with alcohol, oxidation, caramel, malt, bourbon, and wood, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.
