Description
Local Option Bierwerker is the brewing division of The Local Option, a pub in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Owner Tony Russomanno has established himself in the craft beer community through years of experience, and today he partners with six different breweries to create all of Local Option's diverse and innovative beers. Local Option Bierweker believes partnering with different breweries gives them maximum flexibility, allowing them to brew as large or as limited a batch as needed. They’ve taken up recipes long forgotten by the mainstream, such as the Kentucky Common, and perfected well-established favorites, like their steam beer Dampf Loc. Local Option Bierwerker offers a brash, in-your-face approach to craft beer; they brew with bravado and aren’t afraid of a little well-placed irreverence while still respecting the long-standing traditions that provide the foundation for their heavy metal brews.

On tap at a pricy place in the viagra triangle, Lux Bar, served in a Local Option 10 or 12 oz glass. Paid about $12 for that, which is a lot but its pretty much 10 bucks everywhere in town. So, I paid a little more but at least I got a good beer at a place I would not expect to get some good beer. But that may be my biggest complaint about the beer, its very pricy. Its not some barrel aged, sour, ass puckering, imported, fancy oh la la. Its just a big hoppy beer, sure very big but still. But back to the point. Color is dark honey amber, cannot see through it but glows. Strong head as well. In short this is a good old school high octane hoppy beer. I actually do not get caramel notes from this, which I do not like in hoppy beer. There are some residual sugars, well a good deal, but it works for the beer. There are just enough sugars to offset some of the heat and a lot of bitter hops in the flavor. Along with the bitter hops, the other hoppy flavors lean toward fruit but not overly tropical. As I said, not caremel, not overly sweet or sticky, very hoppy, very big but sugars hiding some of the heat. I wont drink it again because of the price but I enjoyed my experience. Haven’t done a decent version of this kind of beer in a few years.

(Draught at Söernes Ölbar, Copenhagen, 12 July 2013) Golden colour with frothy, white head. Fruity, sourish nose with notes of citrus, lemon peel, coriander and white bread. Fruity, slightly tart taste with citrus, bread, gooseberries, grass, coriander and a touch of salt emerging on the lips after a while. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness and hardly any bitterness. Different, but quite enjoyable.

On tap at the beer Trappe in Lexington Kentucky. It is a murky gold with a slight head. The aroma is citrus and the taste is rather bitter citrus that lingers on the palate.

Tap at Jerry’s in Wicker Park. A thick golden color beer, solid with no clarity. Leaves behind a strong lace. Aroma is pretty cool with dusty pear yeastiness with pie-crust crumb-like maltiness. Like I said, cool. Flavor similar with a light pear esters and slightly stale unsugary bready maltiness.

Tap at Craft Beer Clerko, 08/07/13. Hazed light golden with little headage. Nose is cheesey Wotsits, light sour fruits, burnt cottage cheese, dirty citrus, unplesant! Taste is not as offensive as the nose, tarte lemon, waxy, light cheesey notes, straw, singed grass. Medium bodied, fine carnbonation, dry finish. Smells awful, average flavour, not great.

Craft Clerkenwell 2nd Birthday Bonanza! Keg. Light haze on this amber beer. Little white head. Palate is light and a little soft with fine minerally carbonation. Little malt cream. Tangy dried fruits. Overall has a nice German feel about it.

Craft Clerkenwell 2nd Birthday Bonanza! Very hazy gold beer, little white head. Nose is puke and smoke! Lovely! Palate is light and crispy. There is some light citrus and smoke here but I did want to keep it in my mouth long enough to taste further because by far the most dominant taste here is bad milk. A clusterfuck of a beer, worst I’ve had in 2013 and possibly longer
